From the Bench: Happy Holidays

Happy holidays

Welcome to issue 116 of Woodcraft Magazine. This is our holiday issue and we’re excited to share it with you. Actually, I’m always excited when a new issue comes out. It is gratifying to see stories that have been in the works, sometimes for a year or more, come to life on these pages. Even more exciting is to see the photos of projects you’ve built from our plans. Check out the Reader Showcase for the latest batch. There are some sweet pieces there. I think that’s what has kept me in the game for so long: I just love sharing what I’ve learned about the craft and helping people become better woodworkers.

With that in mind, this issue’s lineup has some wonderful projects and ideas for you to share whether you’re building for yourself, or thinking of those on your gift list. If you’re into holiday décor, we have two seasonal
features on deck. Derek Richmond’s snowman is actually a three-drawer bandsaw box that will stand ready to hold spare bulbs or any variety of holiday treats. And, for this year’s scroll-sawn ornament, we offer two sizes of miniature Christmas trees. To protect your holiday table, we have a delightful fish-shaped trivet. Or if your preference is for a little larger-scale woodworking, check out Sarah Marriage’s blanket ladder. Made of Port Orford cedar, this minimalist rack will be a handy addition to nearly any room in your house. Even better, it won’t require more than a few basic tools to make. For the even moreambitious, Rob Spiece’s three-legged stool is a master class in building fixtures that ensure success. If nothing else, browse the drawings to marvel at Rob’s problem-solving abilities. Don’t miss our workshop gift guide, for the woodworker looking to branch out. Here we carefully paired select books with the necessary tools for venturing into four specialized corners of the woodworking world. Finally, if you have youngsters in your life, consider getting them one or both of the books we present in Woodworking Finds. It is never too soon to start kindling a love of making.

From all of us here at the magazine, thank you for being our readers. We wish you the very best this holiday season.
