Metal Shelf-Based Storage Cabinet
I was contemplating how to build a strong, sturdy storage
cabinet to hold my finishes. I did not
want a metal cabinet but wanted the adjustability of a metal cabinet’s shelves,
as well as a surface on the shelves that could be cleaned easier than wooden
The solution was to build a wood cabinet around a metal shelf, using the shelf as the frame and 3/4" plywood as the shell. The shell was cut to just fit the perimeter of the shelf unit. I then used pocket holes to fasten the wooden panels together and screwed the shelf frame parts inside. Careful measuring ensured that the metal shelf fit perfectly inside the cabinet with room to install and adjust the shelves as needed.
The doors were added using piano hinges so they were sturdy
with not much adjustment needed. I
sprayed clear polyurethane finish to give the cabinet a fingerprint proof
exterior and used magnetic catches to hold the doors closed.
While the intent was not to create an entirely fireproof
cabinet, the metal and 3/4" plywood construction does afford some
protection from fire. Fire-resistant plywood could have been used if additional
protection was desired. Construction was straightforward and simple, with the
result being a very sturdy and attractive cabinet while the exterior look fits
well with the rest of the wooden cabinets in the shop.
