Learn the basics of carving spoons. How to gouge out the bowl, how to slim down the handle and make simple yet useful flourishes for your simple basswood spoon.
In this class we will go over the safety and process of all the tools needed for class. We will be making a basic charcuterie board that you get to leave with finished at the end of this class. Students must be over 14 years old, with an accompanied adult over 18 years of age.
Learn with Chuck Engstrom - professional turner -how to prepare and mount a blank, size a tenon, chuck mounting, rough vs. finishing cuts with a "fingernail" bowl gouge. Then, reverse mounting, hollowing with gouges and scrapers and tricks for finishing the base. With Chuck's guidance you'll soon be turning out elegant bowls. After lunch, you will have an opportunity to apply the basics covered in the morning session and enhance your skills. Learn even more techniques for added control with the versatile bowl gouge. You practice hollowing methods needed when forming an inward turned rim.
