Basic Cabinet Construction

Description: This course in basic cabinet making will launch your home-improvement skills so you can tackle that shop, bathroom, or kitchen remodeling project! Part lecture, part demo, part hands-on, this class covers everything from the planning and design stage of your project, to making an accurate take-off and materials list, to construction techniques. The instructor will demonstrate step by step the construction of the cabinet box, the face-frame using the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig system, ( you’ll get the chance to practice the techniques) and then get to see how all of this goes together to make the final product. Also learn how to construct a simple drawer box and learn a few options in constructing a cabinet door. We will teach you how to install the door using European style hinges. Ideas for more advanced door and drawer front options will also be discussed. You’ll leave with a fundamental understanding of the entire process and ideas to customize these principles for your home project.

George, our go to staff member for turning knowledge, will be teaching this class as an introduction to several others in a comprehensive turning program to take you from hesitant novice to confident early intermediate. This class will cover safety, safety and more safety when handling the lathe and supporting power tools you, as a turner, will find yourself using, including the bandsaw, grinder, sander, and possibly, a chainsaw. Bring your pencil, notebook, and your desire to get hooked on turning, because once you take George's series of classes, you, too will be chasing down tree service trucks, looking for that perfect piece of wood to turn.

Our five employee instructors, George Chisholm (Turning), Tom Smith (Pen Turning), Greg Burge (Hand Tools and Finishing Specialties), John Carter (Furniture and Cabinets),and Claude Godcharles (Power Tools and Projects) are available to arrange for private instruction anytime our classroom is not in use. This is the perfect opportunity to brush up on something or to get in-depth instruction on a technique you are trying to master. If they are not on shift that day, simply ask one of the sales associates to check the schedule so that you can call back to speak with them about arranging for private instruction.

Description: This course in basic cabinet making will launch your home-improvement skills so you can tackle that shop, bathroom, or kitchen remodeling project! Part lecture, part demo, part hands-on, this class covers everything from the planning and design stage of your project, to making an accurate take-off and materials list, to construction techniques. The instructor will demonstrate step by step the construction of the cabinet box, the face-frame using the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig system, ( you’ll get the chance to practice the techniques) and then get to see how all of this goes together to make the final product. Also learn how to construct a simple drawer box and learn a few options in constructing a cabinet door. We will teach you how to install the door using European style hinges. Ideas for more advanced door and drawer front options will also be discussed. You’ll leave with a fundamental understanding of the entire process and ideas to customize these principles for your home project.
