Tiny Dwellings: Beginning Bark-House Carving

Interested in bark carving? Learn how to turn rugged slabs of locally foraged cottonwood bark into whimsical woodland cottages. With expert guidance, you’ll practice essential knife and gouge techniques to shape flaky bark into doorways, shingled roofs, chimneys, and stone‑look textures. You’ll leave with a completed 4"–6" bark house and the confidence to keep carving on your own. Loaner carving tools are provided by Woodcraft, and additional materials will be available for purchase. Note: A $5 materials fee (cash preferred) will be collected by the instructor at the beginning of class.

Building on the techniques we practiced in Inlays Part 1, you'll use an existing template to cut a simple shape in a surface and then use the template to make the accompanying inlay to fill that void - cleanly and seamlessly. If you master this technique, you'll have the foundation you'll need to move on to more complex designs. We also explore the range of carbide tools available and how to use them, and we provide basic lathe techniques to help you turn the perfect bowl.
