If applying a finish to your woodworking projects is a chore, a nightmare or simply confusing, this class will help you take control of the process. Learn what you need to know to pop the grain on figured woods and how to select the best finish for the particular needs of your project. Get the results you want with the proper surface preparation, the correct combination of finishing products, and use of the correct application techniques and tools for the job. Topics include: Properties and the finishing characteristics of wood species. Surface preparation and dealing with defects, Coloring wood with dyes, stains and toners, Selecting top coats and the characteristics of each, Application tools including brushing and spray gun basics, and Finishing the finish

Woodworking Fundamentals

Part 1: Monday, August 25, 6 PM - 8:30 PM

Part 2: Tuesday, August 26, 6 PM - 8:30 PM

Part 3: Wednesday, August 27, 6 PM - 8:30 PM

During this 3-part class, participants will learn how to use a table saw, jointer, thickness planer and mitersaw while making a laminated cutting board. Hard maple and cherry will be used for the laminations. Limited use of a router will also be involved.

HAND TOOL SHARPENING

Saturday, September 6, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Learn what you need to know to quickly get razor sharp edges on your hand tools. In this hands-on class you will learn what is sharp, why we sharpen, how to sharpen and when to stop. The sharpening process can be applied across the many hand sharpening systems available today including water stones, diamond stones, oil stones or the scary sharp sandpaper system. This class will focus on sharpening plane irons and chisels. The skills learned can be applied to any cutting edge tool. Bring a dull chisel or plane blade to sharpen in class.
