This awl ROCKS!!!
I use this in building guitars, acoustic and electric, sometimes using EXTREMELY hard woods. This things marks even bubinga and purpleheart easily and accurately with no dulling, and is SUPER sturdy! Don't let the bulky look scare you. As big as it looks, it actually tapers to a sharp needlepoint for extreme precision, with no dulling.
Pretty but poor quality control
Disappointed to find that mine was bent - there was a slight arc along the metal tip. Rather than return it I ground it true in a couple of minutes on my sharpening rig. Then I cleaned up the top of the wood handle, where you would tap it with a mallet. That wasn't a symmetrical shape across the top. But gee, for [$] such a simple little tool should be flawless, not a nice kit for making what you thought you were buying. Makes me feel foolish for buying it.It (now) works as intended for punching centers on turning pieces and marking various spots for holes and so forth. And looks nice.
just a neat little tool
i bought this figuring i would put it in my woodworking showcase. then i needed an awl in a jiff mine went missing. now i use this everyday.it is very well made and nice feel . buy two, one for display and one for work. they are that handsome
This is a nice size awl.
The finish is very good. Very useful tool.
I'm always working in hardwoods and this awl allows you to really get some force behind it for marking these type of woods.
I need to do a lot of precise drilling with a hand drill. Using this to start the hole lets be be more precise. The large handle is great for my arthritis.
excellent quality and feel
Great feel and quality awl.
