V3: Like our previous WoodRiver® Bench Hand Planes, our version 3 is based on the reliable Bedrock design and features heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs and high carbon steel blades, but we took the opportunity between manufacturing runs to do a critical review and make a few improvements. We’ve changed the shape of the rear tote and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. We improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade. We’ve made numerous changes to the castings that result in better “feedback” and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with our own manufacturer, we’ve continued to make improvements in machining, finish and functionality which we feel have yielded hand planes that are meant to be used and offer an extraordinary value.

Flat out of the box
This thing is awesome! It was flat right out of the box. I did a few passes over the diamond stone sharpened the blade and went to work! It’s worth every penny.

This is a great plane! I sharpened and honed the blade to a 16000 grit and it exceeded my expectations!

Great plane, great value
A properly tuned, properly sharpened hand plane will take a shaveing 1/8th the thickness of a dollar bill. That's 0.0005. This plane will do that and I"ve got the photos to prove it. What this means is that you can take a shaving so thin you can see through it, and you can sneak up on a precise measurement in a way no machine made can. It means there is almost nothing in wood you can't make or can't fix.

Love this plane!
Purchased the #4 and the #7 during a 20% off sale in fall of 2013. Have been using both for about 6 months now. Impressed with both, particularly for the value. Arrived well packaged, well oiled, and no concerns with the service/shipping of these items. Only fettling required out of the box was wiping down all the oil, and tightening up the knob and tote. After almost 6 months of use, I have no regrets. The plane body is well machined and cast, with a sole that is dead flat and square. Adjustment of the frog is a bit finnicky but once it is set then its done (I keep the mouth tight for a fine shaving). Only drawback is the blade itself. It's a decent quality A2 blade that holds an edge well but it took a fair bit of work to lap it to a flat back with a nice polish. Only needs to be done once though. Overall I'm really pleased with this #7. I love the feel of it in my hands, it's got some hefty mass to it and it's a pleasure to use. As I mentioned, getting a razor sharp blade took a bit of work but once that was done this plane performs exactly as I had hoped. I would definitely consider adding other WR planes to my collection (possibly their new 4 1/2 or 5 1/2!).

Good value
Picked up the #4 and #7 during the recent 20% off sale. So far I've used the #7 to flatten and edge joint some hard maple, walnut and padauk. Overall I'm pretty impressed with the quality of machining, especially for the price (at 20% off). I have a few Veritas planes at home and that's my comparison - the quality of construction is about as good but with the 20% off, at a significant discount. Out of the box, the only tune-up required of the body was to tighten down the tote and wipe off the oil with some mineral spirits. The blade took a bit of work to get to a mirror polish and that's my only significant complaint. It had a convexity on the back that required lapping on a 220 stone. Overall about an hour of lapping/polishing to get a mirror finish on the back. Overall, a great value if you can get it on sale.

Excelent
The overall quality of this plane is amazing, especially considering the price. The blade came "almost" sharp out of the box, I only spent 2 minutes on the diamond stones flattening and polishing the back of the blade and added a microbevel, Then it produced very nice curls and left behind a gorgeous smooth surface. The sole of the plane came perfectly flat out of the box. Have used this plane for edge jointing boards (even though I own a power jointer) in preparation for table top glue-up, then for flattening the completed piece. The massive size and considerable weight of the tool, and the very nice blade, in addition to the very high quality of the machining makes of this a very easy and enjoyable to use plane, but most important it works as it is supposed to work. I couldnt be any happier with my purchase of this woodriver v3 #7 jointer plane.

Work Like a Pro.
I already had the no.5 and the no.4 soon I realize that I need a larger plane . So I was thinking about buying the no.6 but I never got around to do so,and I'm glade I didn't buy one . Wood river came out with the no.7 plane at the right time also the right price . and right down my alley . The plane does the work just as good as a 425.00 plane . Once I learn how to put on razor sharp edge . I was in plane business .Just as happy as one,two three . I can't wait to start working on my new workbench and some new cabinets .This plane make my work look like a pro. behind the job .It leave a finish so smooth I don't want to use my no.5 and 4 .Wood River ,what took you so long ?

Big Hunk of Iron
I couldn't pass up the 20% off sale. This is one heavy duty tool. It takes some time to get the blade flat, honed and polished, but it is worth the time. I have had trouble getting the fine scratches out of my other Wood River irons, so I also bought a Pinnacle blade that was ready to go out of the box. The iron that came with the #7 polished surprisingly well. I flattened it with a series of DMT stones,#6000 water stone, then green compound on a leather strop. The sole of this plane is dead flat, and I jointed both edges of a 6' pine board just for fun. I am looking forward to flattening some glued up panels. The edges of the boards that I jointed had that just planed shine and were as smooth as glass. I have had all of my other WR planes for over a year, and I expect this plane to hold up as well as they have. I may never use my 6" jointer again. A better plane iron would have earned this tool the 5th star from me. The iron is adequate with some work.
