Details

Ambrosia Maple is technically not a specific species of maple, but rather a general description of any type of maple that has been infested by ambrosia beetles. The beetles bore into the tree, and with it bring fungus that discolors the wood creating a variety of greyish-blue to brown streaks. Ambrosia Maple is considered a decorative feature which gives the wood additional character. Maple (Acer saccharum) sapwood color ranges from nearly white, to an off-white cream color, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue. The heartwood tends to be a darker reddish brown. Straight, close grain with a fine, uniform texture. Fairly easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Turns, glues, and finishes well, though blotches can occur when staining, and a pre-conditioner, gel stain, or toner may be necessary to get an even color. Common uses include furniture, joinery, turning projects, paneling and veneering.

Features:

  • Wormy soft maple with intriguing patterns
  • Heavy, strong and stiff with moderate shock resistance
  • Turns, glues and finishes well
  • Native to North America
