The newest evolution of the classic Nova Chuck is finally available - the SuperNova2! Its nickel plated body is made from high grade K1045 steel machined to allow closer tolerances. Its patented gearing system delivers incredible gripping power and is over a third faster than the original SuperNova. With SuperNova2 gripping power you'll find yourself turning longer, more delicate stems. Large, rough and uneven work that you couldn't handle before can now be turned with greater security. The SuperNova2 requires only one hand to operate using a ball nosed Allen key with a large easy grip handle (included). It's quick to tighten and requires much less effort. The ball nose allows the handle to operate at an angle while tightening the chuck. The SuperNova2 has a fully sealed heavy duty backing plate made from Duracon 25 composite which is reinforced with stranded glass fiber. Backing plate design incorporates a 24 division index for future indexing accessories. All of the original Nova Chuck accessories, jaws and inserts are 100% compatible with the SuperNova2! The unique and user friendly features of this chuck prove it was designed by and for woodturners. Diameter of chuck is 3-7/8", depth is 3-3/8", weight 5-1/2 lb. Includes 50mm jaw set, T-bar, Allen wrenches, woodworm screw and manual. Requires a threaded body insert to fit your lathe.

      Better the a book

I drove 3 hrs to see this place. I was told by a FB group for Lathe users they where pro’s at wood working and I wasn’t disappointed. They sold me only what I needed for a beginner and they gave me a hands on demonstration of what I was buying. The store was clean and organized. Fully stocked. A wood workers parade. Well worth the drive and gas. I will be back soon to get upgrades on my equipment.

      Mostly good

Overall it does a good job at gripping, fiddly and time consuming changing jaws though the biggest issue for me was the soft metal that Teknatool decided to use on making the pinions, within one year one of them wore out and the supplied hex key just slipped, apparently this is not covered on the warranty and the blame was directed right back at me as 'user error' which was not the case.My next chuck shall be a better brand.

      Superior Product

I tried using cheaper chucks but this one was far superior. Sturdy construction, takes a beating but keeps on going. With all of the accessories available the flexibility is nearly endless

      Came up a little short

Difficult to change jaws. You would think for the price you would get a good T-wrench to change the jaw screws, instead of a cheap short hex wrench. The jaw screws seem cheap also. Since buying I have seen other chucks some more expensive, some less, all as good or better. Must rate Nova2 just average.

      Good Lathe Chuck

Have several SN2 chucks now to avoid changing jaws for different projects. Holds well and easy to use. Use for holding tenon and in expansion mode. Good value for the money.

      Nice Chuck

This is my second SuperNova2. The first one was purchased a couple years ago and they are very similar. When they are on sale, as periodically happens here at Woodcraft, they're a good bargain. Mostly I turn small to medium bowls as a hobby, selling some here and there. Turning is a nice break from making cabinets and furniture for a living. A few bowls have popped off the chuck but it was my fault for being too aggressive with the gouge. There are two very minor annoyances with these chucks. First, the spur gears you tighten with the Allen wrench tend to rattle at slower speeds. I suppose I could quiet them with some heavy grease but that would attract dust. The second is a problem with concentricity. When I turn a bowl around for hollowing, from the worm screw to being gripped by the chuck jaws, the exterior of the bowl is slightly off center. it seems the jaw positioning isn't perfect. Maybe all chucks have these characteristics? I don't know since I'm relatively new to turning. Neither is a big deal.

      Solid product

I use this with my Rikon mini lathe and the combination works great. Changing jaws is a quick process and the dual screw attachment is very secure. The ball end on the tightening wrench is a convenient design element.

      Excellent chuck

Easy to use and holds the wood very securely. I use it in the contraction mode most of the time but it holds well expanding in a recess also. It is easy to change jaw sets for different size work. I highly recommend it.

Not as good as the first.

This is the second SuperNova II chuck that I purchased. I got tired of changing jaws. I am very dissappointed in the quality of the second chuck. The machine work is of poor quality which makes it difficult to operate.

Bought a second one while they were on sale $60 off. Now I don't have to mess with screws changing from standard to 100mm jaws.

      SUPER is correct!

I've been using this chuck with 100mm jaws for bowls. The bowl blank sizes I've turned with this chuck are 8-12" diameter, 3-4" thick. Haven't had a problem gripping a spigot with it and have turned about a dozen bowls with this chuck since purchasing it. I'm glad I purchased the SuperNova2 and the 100mm jaws. Will probably purchase more jaws for other types of turning projects in the near future.

      So far it's all good

After receving the chuck,I dissembled it,cleaned in a solvent bath to get rid of the stinky shipping grease, cleaned a few minor milling burrs off the keyways, lubed and reassembled. I had purchased two different sized inserts (2 different lathes)and tried the chuck on both machines. After cleaning and deburring, this chuck operates smooth as butter. No runout on either lathe. Excelent holding power and it's really easy to operate with the ball nosed t-wrench. A good range of jaws are avalable when I'm ready to go that route.

      Excellent Chuck

I have purchased several different jaw sizes for this chuck and use them all. This is my favorite chuck, by far (I only have two). Self centers perfectly and holds tight. I have completed a few segmented turning projects and this chuck gets me through those rough turning stages, no problem.

      Works As Advertised, but.....

This is a well built tool that works as advertised. I had a couple of issues that I wished were detailed in the description as it would have helped me decided about purchasing this tool. First, when using the supplied wormscrew, this tool should be run at 600 RPM as stated in the printed instructions that came in the box. However, I have an older model [@] Lathe (Model 113.228162) and the lowest speed it will run at is 825 RPMs, so that was an issue. Second, to truly use this tool you need a Nova Dovetail Chisel or some other chisel with the angle set to match the grip of the TEKNATOOL SuperNova2. So, I had to order the chisel after reading the instructions and wait for a week before it arrived, which slowed down my project progress. If I had known, I would have order the chisel when I ordered the SuperNova2.

      Great Gripping power

I Really like these CHUCKS! This is the second one I've gotten in the last year. While they may be a bit heavy, they certainly do grip the wood and hold on. Even at high speeds they don't loosen their grip. You DO have to re-tighten them occasionally, but for versatillity they can't be beat, at least for what I do!

Year after year, simply a great product

What a nice piece of machinery, liked it so much that when I sold my old lathe I bought another SuperNova. Easy to adjust, holds fast w/o crushing, even ridicuously large/heavy pieces. Have used this chuck for 4 years & am still delighted. They're heavy & add good dampening mass to lathe, reasonably priced & seem to really hold up, the geared mechanism is still smooth as silk after repeated use. If there are better chucks out there, I'd be hard pressed to know how these can be beat; just remember to loosen set screws before removing. Also available w/adapter to fit just about any type or diameter, headstock thread.

      Jaws off center

I bought this chuck in 2008 and have made numerous bowls with it. However, I have to be very careful about order of operations in order to avoid re-chucking. As this was my first experience with a chuck, I thought this was normal, but in fact the jaws are machined about 1.5 mm off center. Naturally I didn't figure this out while the chuck was still under warranty. I'm gong to buy replacement jaws in an attempt to salvage the chuck, but I won't be buying another chuck from a company that can let such fundamental flaws slip past quality control.

This is my first four jaw chuck to purchase was worried about the wieght of the chuck? NO problem. works great, using it for pen making, to drill the blanks so purchased the 25mm jaws too, Love them works great. The first project i used the larger jaws on was an off center turning just to see... It was sweet. Highly recomend.

I like the way this chuck positively and with ease locks onto a turned tenon. The only problem I have had with it is the woodworm screw tearing out of end grain cherry under end grain boring conditions.

Purchased this during spring sale. No instructions or DVD (as shown in Teknatools promotional video on their website).Fortunately this was not my first chuck so I figured things out. Take warning of this chuck!!!!!!!!!

I purchased the Nova Super2 chuck from Woodcraft and all can say is bad, bad, bad!!!!!!!!!!The price was great and the chuck looked really well made and it stops there!! The chuck itself is not what Woodcraft advertices it to be. It is not nickel plated. It is made in FRC!! The Federal Republic of China. The jaws have way to much play. The chuck that i received had a runout of .031inches in round and across the face the runout was .028 inches now that is bad!!!Some of you may fill your chuck is ok but Im telling you know send it back and a message. I have sent my chuck back to Woodcraft [...]!!!!! All of the chucks should be recalled and the matter taken up with Tekatools. After the problem is solved then have at it.

Not the quality of my first supernova2

This is my second Supernova2 and I am very disapointed. My first chuck has tight tolerances, good fit and finish. The new one has poor tolerances causing problems with rechucking a piece. With my cole Jaw attached and the Jaws open each jaw moved .035 to .040 inches front to back. (measured with a dial caliper my original moved .010 inch) The new chuck came with a nice note advising me that the Nickle plating was not needed and had been discontinued. (I suppose in the future I will have to be careful not to transfer any surface rust to my Holley turnings.) Teknatool failed to return an email requesting information about the tolerances indicated above. In summary the made in china Supernova2 is a poor copy of the original made in New Zeland Supernova2 and realy should not be allowed to be sold under the same name.

      You need more than one!

Although it's really easy to change the jaws, more than one SuperNova 2 is a great idea so time isn't wasted switching jaws back and forth. There are jaws for every project you can think of, and they're rugged and true. I can't think of one reason why the SuperNova 2 shouldn't be in every wood turners shop!

High quality "chuck value" if on sale.

Pro. When on super sale this "high quality chuck value" which is nearly impossible to beat. Pro. First hands on impression at store is much better than internet photos. Pro. It's a nicely machined chuck that is well thought out. The chuck metal is heavy duty 4lbs with insert and seems durable. Pro. Chuck spins true very little run out if any at all. Con. It takes approx 8 full rotations of the key to open/close the chuck through its range. Con. My first brand new chuck had a pinion that was binding/rubbing hard when turning the wrench to tighten it. Pro. The replacement/exhange chuck opens & closes fine smooth as it should. Pro. The Craft store kindly exchanged it the next day and allowed me to inspect the new replacement chucks jaw movement before I left. Con. The grub screw is tricky to install. Con. A burr left from drilling and tapping hole for grub screw. Con. A little rust preventer oil to flew off after wiping off excess making a mess on the wall and lathe. Pro. Dovetail jaw with great holding power. Con. Inside diameter of 50mm dovetail jaw doesnt appear to be perfectly straight. Conclusion. Inspect the chuck before leaving the store.

a good tool... but, just shy of GREAT...

i bought the original supernova around the turn of the century... i still have that chuck and love it, the ONLY drawback to that lovely piece of equipment was the frustration encountered when trying to insert the chuck key and have the gears mesh... over the years i have added many jaw sets, and they all work well... so when the supernova2 was offered for a very reasonable price recently, i bought not one more, but two... these supernova2 chucks are heavier and more solidly built than the original, and the addition of a seal on the backside was a stroke of genius... and, HEAVEN!!! the chuck key is SO easy to use!!! HOWEVER, the jawslides on these new chucks exhibit MUCH more "slop" than the original chuck does... after the jaws are tightened on the work, they seem to be centered, but, hard for me to tell... it sure would be nice if the tolerances were tighter...

This chuck works very well on my Shopsmith tool. The price was right with the sale.

      Great chuck.

I've turned bowl blanks that were so out of balance that I shouldn't have been attempting to turn them. Never had a problem with the chuck.

      a great help

I am making 85 balusters using 2x2 blanks on a Legacy Mill and a lathe. It is fast and convenient for changing pieces.

      new chuck for new turner

After reading numerous comments about the supernova2, and comparing similar products, I was not suprised to find this product everything I expected. Easy to use, easy for a beginner to understand, top notch quality. I highly recommend this product for anyone who is still on the fence about chucks.

      Great chuck

I have 3 of these chucks and they all work flawlessly. Can handle anything my Powermatic 3520b can turn. They are now made in China but they seem to be of the same great quality as are the original ones built in New Zealand.

      3rd time a charm?

1st one could't get to spin true. A new chuck and adapter solved the problem. 2nd one froze up.So now I am on my 3rd chuck.Mind you that this was only after a few months of use.
