    Details

Teak, Plantation (Tectona grandis) Native to Costa Rica and Central America, this tree is planted exclusively for forestry management, along with a high demand for this timber. Teak heartwood is a uniform golden brown without markings. Grain is usually straight to slightly wavy, and the texture is coarse, uneven and oily to the touch, sometimes with a white glistening deposit.

Woodworking properties include medium resistance to cutting tools. Pre drilling is required for nailing. Gluing is good on freshly planed or sanded surfaces. Stains well and takes a satisfactory finish, especially an oil finish. Fine machine dust is a skin irritant. Teak is used extensively in shipbuilding and boat building for decking, rails, hatches, etc. Other uses include furniture making and cabinetmaking, flooring, garden furniture, chemical vats, fume ducts, laboratory benches, plywood, and decorative veneers.

    Features:

    • Golden brown with straight to slightly wavy grain

    • Coarse texture

    • Used extensively in ship and boat building

Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project. Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.
