Spalted Maple (Acer saccharum) is technically not a species of Maple, but a general description of any type of Maple allowed to begin the initial stages of decay, which is then dried to prevent further decay. This partial decay, known as spalting, gives the wood its unique characteristic dark lines and streaks where fungus has begun to attack. It machines and turns well with sharp tools, and it glues and finishes well, but blotches may occur when staining so a preconditioner is recommended.
Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.
