Hand sanding is tough labor, something that most woodworking and woodturning projects require, but everyone seeks to avoid. New Wave Scuff & Buff Balls are a great alternative. The patented wavy edge design insures consistent finishing quality, and the continuous exposure of new grit means the uniformity of the Scuff Ball does not change. The material allows highly efficient airflow, resists clogging, and leaves the Scuff Ball easy to clean by water or compressed air.
  • 2"-diameter New Wave design with 3-1/2" shaft
  • Works in all drills, drill presses, and grinders
  • Resists clogging
  • Easy to clean with water or compressed air
  • Fits most hand drills, lathe chucks, drill presses and more!

Seems like a good idea for sanding the inside of things like bowls until, after about 4 or 5 minutes, you realize that the grit is gone from the surface of the ball and all you're doing is rubbing your bowl or whatever with plastic wool. The manufacturer claims that the ball continuously wears down exposing new grit but that doesn't actually happen at a useful rate. After just a few minutes there's no grit available at the surface of the ball.

    Good for unusual sanding applications

The 180 grit ball does take a sharp edge off a newly routed part. I think that I was hoping for a more agressive cut. Still learing how to use most effectively. To date have been using on a drill press with reasonable results. This is a special application tool when other more conventional sanding devices do not seem to do well.

    Leaves colors on wood carvings

Iused the scruff ball to finish off a wood carving. The ball's abrasiveness deteriorates quickly with use and cannot be applied except for short periods without leaving color (green) on the object being sanded.
