I've been toying with the idea of getting a carbide tool for awhile, but just recently pulled the trigger. My advice: DON'T WAIT! I've been using S**by tools - which are good, but this thing is amazing. It is razor sharp out of the box, and slices off material at an unbelievable rate. I'm going back for the chip shield. AND - it leaves a perfectly smooth piece of wood behind. I knocked out a pen in about half the time. Money well spent if you do much turning. No, I'm not being paid to write this - this is one of those rare things that actually works better than you expect.
