Honduran Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is also known as Tropical Mahogany, South American Mahogany, Caoba and Chiculte. It is planted throughout the tropics as a sustainable forest crop and is widely available. Its short grain grows in a swirling pattern, and the shortness of the grain makes it perfect for carving, turning, and other woodworking. Honduran Mahogany cuts beautifully without chipping, sands well, glues well and finishes to a luxurious red-gold sheen. Works similar to Walnut, being approximately the same weight. There are few woods as beautiful or as pleasant to work.
We have secured these off falls from Taylor Guitars, and while they did not make their way into a guitar they can still make amazing finished projects. Note that there may be small knots or or other small imperfections.
