Perfect for the Job
I needed these lid supports for four segmental lids of a long built-in window seat. When the contractor finished the seat, the lids not only slammed down hard, but also the two end lids didn't stay open (where they contacted the window side trim). I knew I needed something to protect my 6-year-old's fingers and head. These lid supports were the perfect solution! I used two supports per lid (right and left). I calculated the required moment in advance and bought the 45-55 inch-pound supports for an appropriate 90-110 inch-pounds of support per lid. The lids now stay open at any opening angle, close gently, and stay closed when closed. Also, I had to install the supports upsidedown because the hinges on my window seat lids are on the top rather than on the back as it would usually be for a free-standing chest. When I bought the supports, I wasn't sure if I could flip them upsidedown for my application or not, but in case anyone else has the same question, I can confirm that the supports work inverted as well for hinge-on-top applications. Basically, when the hinge is open to 90 degrees, you will have two surfaces that are parallel, but separated by the 3/4" thickness of the back or top of the piece you're attaching to. The body of the lid support should be aligned parallel to both surfaces and oriented so that the end with the longer "knee" spans the 3/4" gap to reach the farther surface. In my inverted scenario, I attached the top first (nearest screw centered 1-1/16" from the edge) and then the bottom with the lid open. Just like the diagram in the instructions, but flipped upsidedown.
