Mr. Akio Tasai began his training at age 13 during a time when it was customary for chisel blacksmiths to begin training at age 16. He opened his first workshop on his father-in-law’s farm at age 21. Now some 50 years later, Mr. Tasai continues to make beautiful chisels and plane blades, the Yari Kanna blade being one of his specialties. Mr. Tasai considers his knowledge to be one of his most prized possessions, and his son Mitio, a Master Swordsmith, has begun to study his father’s technique. It is hoped that this knowledge will be passed from father to son so these fine blades will be available for the next generation.
The Yari Kanna is one of the oldest style planes still available and is used to smooth boards that have been hewn with an adze. Available in large and small sizes, these age-old tools are still made with the best quality steel, very similar to blue steel. The tools’ edge retention is incredible. Handles are made from Ho (a relative of Magnolia).
