You might say, what’s the big deal about turning a bowl in about 3 hours time, anyone can do that! Well in this project we will instruct you on how to turn a bowl while it’s green, dry it, finish it, all in just a few hours. John Wolf (from the Turning Tuesday’s woodworkers) shows us how it’s done starting out with a piece of “green” curly maple saved from the scrap pile.
Very nice saw (with nit-picks)
The saw gets five stars, but I do have some nits. Most importantly, it does not have a magnetic switch. If the power goes off while the saw is running, and then comes back on hours later, the saw starts up again. That's bad. Also, the doors that cover the wheels are flimsy/floppy and do not lock firmly. Thus, sawdust escapes from around the lower door even when a vacuum is applied. Finally, as many have pointed out, you have to buy a fence separately. At this price, these flaws should not be present. Overall, however, this is a fine, sturdy and precise saw. I'm looking forward to many years of productive use.
Heavy but put together by myself
Shipping was a day later than planned thru Old Dominion. I called Woodcraft at end of promised delivery time to find status of delivery. Woodcraft was very helpful in finding delivery had been sent out on wrong truck to another state. Day later delivery and the driver was helpful, all was intact and slid the boxes out of semi trailer onto my pickup. Backed up to shop and unloaded with hand dolly. Was able to assemble myself using ladder and come along to raise saw onto base. Have been cutting Box Elder into use for lathe and scroll saw. Works as expected so far. Need to purchase a fence soon.
Great 14" Saw
This will be my last bandsaw. I did a ton of research before pulling the trigger on this baby, and after 1 year I'm still very happy. Does everything I ask it with quiet precision. Be sure to replace the blade first thing; Jet should include the fence & a lamp at this price, but overall a great machine.
Well made bandsaw
This machine is powerful and quiet. I installed an excellent, non-Jet aftermarket fence from my older saw and this Jet cuts straight and true without drift. The built in 12" capacity is great - no riser block needed. The rack & pinion blade guide post is very good with a blade guard that regulates itself to cover the band with different height adjustment. Guide bearings and tracking are easy to adjust (with window on edge of upper door) and this setup is well-described in the manual. Table is easy to level and align at 90° with the blade. The unit is very heavy (200+ lbs), so get a friend to help move it/lift it to the base. There are angled stabilizing supports bolted to the back of the base to prevent tipping (the motor is bolted to the back of the cast iron frame creating a bit of a top heavy machine). Do this first! Very nice that there is a lever for quick release of band tension. However, if you have a 1/2" band or larger, the tension is not completely released. This I found puzzling. A Jet product technician told me that complete release only works on 3/8" bands or smaller. The tech also told me that tensioning can be done with the release lever disengaged (opposite of what is said in the manual; see below). Another downside to the tensioning process: the knob is obscenely small, but with a good bit of effort you can get the band up to the proper scale mark, but it is not something you would cherish doing every day. Please note that a plastic scale was stuck with adhesive to the back of the block indicating where the level of tension needed to be for different size blades. It is totally inaccurate - peel it off, and low and behold, embossed on the block is the true scale marks. That's what the Jet technician told me to do. The User Manual needs to be rewritten - poor grammar, photos not with sufficient contrast, not enough information on the tensioning process, where parts are located. Product tech support is timely.
Jet 14 band saw
I like the saw. It has everything that I wanted in a saw. very satisfied with the purchase.
you'll never be sorry
got the bandsaw for my jet lathe best buy for the money. getting another for my jet lathe.my thought was i would get it out of my truck by my self. but i found it takes two people.youll never be sorry.
I'm very happy with my first bandsaw. I researched for months before I made a choice, the thing that got me was the resaw capacity of 12 inches without adding a spacer block. Very easy to adjust the roller guiders and track adjustments, but the tension adjustment leaves a bit to be desired. The adjustment knob was extremly hard to turn and the indicator (which you would have to make assumptions about) was not very well pictured in the manual. They show you where the gauge is but not a close up of the indicator. I played with the fence and was able to cut a 1/8th strip with no blade drift. After all I have read about resawing I was amazed the the thickness was even. I wont be needing a new saw for quite a long while. BTW the fence and miter gauge didn't come with the saw as noted above. Trying to find these accesories was a pain and Woodcrafters didn't carry them (or so I was told)so I fell back on one of the auction sites and saved quite a bit of $$$. I bought tooling for a 16 inch band saw and had to drill a few holes in the rails but it worked out really well. Very good purchase!!
Best Bandsaw I used
I taught shop for 34 years and had Delta and Craftman"s bandsaws in my shops, from 24 inch to 12 inch. This is the best. Powerful motor, great capacity of 12" thick cuts, the best system to hold and track the blade, no "cool blocks"that will move out for bad cuts. It has a solid base and smooth quiet cutting. I had a dream that they would make a saw like this and Jet did. Why did I have to wait until I am 60? Well worth the extra money!
A Great Saw
I was upgrading my shop from a small benchtop bandsaw and didn't want to have to upgrade again anytime soon. This bandsaw wasn't even available in my local Woodcraft store, but it looked like everything I had been advised to look for in a bandsaw. [...] After setting it up, I have been quite happy with it's performance and accuracy. It's really more tool that I needed, but I felt like buying only one more bandsaw. My dad used to tell me to buy the best the first time and I wouldn't have to worry about quality, and this tool meets that requirement. It's got power, accuracy, clearance and is relatively easy to use. I seem to hit the ON switch instead of the OFF switch when trying to turn it off. This is a "user error", but I like ALL my power tools to have a oversized OFF button. Other than this, I have no complaints.
This is my first attempt at resawing. I have had some wood that I needed to resaw for a long time, but didn't have the equipment. I got the Jet 14" Deluxe band saw as a gift so I put it to work. I first used a 3/8" blade to do some small resawing (+/- 5" black walnut burl) and was suprised that it did very well! I expected that the small blade would not track straight and true. I then bought a 3/4" blade, a standard Lennox bimetal blade, and cut a 12" thick piece of fiddle-back maple approximately18" long. It did very well. I made three passes, first cleaning up the face and two more cutting 1" slabs. It was a bit slow but I was cutting a pretty thick piece of wood and it never hesitated and I don't even thing the motor slowed down. I was VERY pleased with the performance of my new Jet 14: deluxe saw. It resaws wonderfully.
