From the first time woodworkers tried sandpaper-on-glass sharpening, they’ve wrestled with the fact that most abrasives can’t stand up long against steel. First, I should say I have little to no experience with rasps, except that they have always disappointed me. Since it was on sale, I decided to try it. OK, this thing is SHARP! You can smooth end grain with it if you are careful. Technique matters. I watched the video, and I realized that there are many ways to apply the file to the task. In the video, the file is held at an angle and simply pulled along the wood. I think this results in a much more coarse cut than if the file is pushed lengthwise into the work. If you push lengthwise, a much lighter touch is needed, and the resulting finish is much smoother. Those just my observations so far. I am considering buying a 2nd one, or maybe the big extreme-fine cut version. I am really glad I bought this file!

This is the cleanest cutting file/rasp I've ever owned and I have all the major names, including Auriou. You just let this file ride softly along your surface, no real hand pressure, and it will yield an accurate, plane-like surface.
