This project was my first experience in turning these Travel Mugs offered in a kit by Woodcraft. This is a relatively new kit with a screw top lid. In our online ad, it states, “Create a custom travel mug using your favorite wood or mixed media to produce a one-of-a-kind dramatic effect. You can either turn the outer liner using a stave configuration or simply use solid wood blocks. Although this kit is for an experienced turner, you will find that the hollowing techniques are easy to execute, and the results are nothing short of amazing.

Does it feel like you spend more time sharpening than turning? Easy Wood Tools has designed a complete turning tool set that eliminates sharpening by employing four-sided replaceable carbide cutters. Thanks to the cutter’s unique design, there’s no bevel angle to figure out: the tool can cut from left to right, or right to left, even straight in, simply by keeping the tool flat on the rest and parallel with the floor.
The Patriot Woodworker organization is asking the public to support a fundraiser that will make the Christmas holiday brighter for a severely wounded veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and his family. Woodcraft is one of three retailers sponsoring the project.
Full size is very big...
If you are like me and purchased without reading deminsions, you will be surprised at the size of these tools. I kicked the purchase around for weeks because of the price. Well, the bottom line is you get everything you paid for and more. Exceptional tools.
the level of quality is suprizingly good
Great roughing tool, makes roughing an easy and quick task.
Eats wood like no other tool I've used.
Eats wood like no other tool. Highly recommend
Ci! Easy Rougher w? Easy Grip Handle
This is an easy-to-use wood turning tool. It is very forgiving and a good choice for beginners as well as advanced turners. However, it is not necessary a substitute for the 1/2-inch bowl gouge, but a close second. Great tool!
Stand-in for Many Other Lathe Tools
I've made many projects with my 2-year old lathe. However, I'd never done a deep hollowing job. My latest project - a wine bottle holder-requires a 4.5 " cavity for a 1.5 liter bottle. I saw Tim Yoder and Tommy McDonald use Easy Wood tools on their shows and realized that this was the tool I needed. The Ci1 Rougher cut through the Hard Maple quickly. The learning curve was about 15 minutes.
Great tool for heavy use
I bought one, went straight to the shop, and fell in love with it on the first cut. Then I went home, my wife saw the price tag and said, You've got to get a new hobby." Now I just buy the cutters and make my own shafts from 1/2' or 3/8" stainless or plated key stock and I turn my own handles. Cost is well under [$]. The trick is to grind the bed for the cutter absolutely flat and to get the bevel on the end to match the bevel of the cutter. I round the bottom of the shaft a little more than Easy-wood does. This lets me work in tighter corners and does not catch as often. This is not only a great rougher, but you can get a fine finish by using it as a shear scraper. Great product!
Big, Beautiful Roughing Tool
I was building a large stair case with a considerable number of Newels and Balusters using a pattern duplicator. I quickly realized just how painfully slow this can be. So I started roughing the spindles out first with a HSS skew chisel and gouge. This worked pretty good except the beech I was using dulled the tools quickly and it was very easy to catch the work. So out of desperation I decided to give this bad boy a try. It looks expensive on the web site because you don't really get a feel of what you are getting. This thing is huge with a nice long handle (about the length of your forearm) that gives you plenty of leverage. The bit holder is 1/2" sqr steel which gives plenty of rigidity to reach in 3-4" from the tool rest without causing any problems. It now only takes me a few minutes to bring my stock down to round with out any catches or torn wood. I loved it so much in fact that I immediately ordered the mini-finisher & detailer(They are cheaper and I figured I didn't need the extra reach provide by the bigger tool). These feel a lot safer when I'm finishing up my beads and coves. It is just to easy to screw up a spindle bead with an inadvertent catch with a skew chisel. As far as surface finish goes they do a pretty good job. While not as polished as a properly sharpened skew chisel, the surface is clean with no tear outs and can be easily sanded smooth. To be honest, I had to sand the Skew Chisel work also so it isn't a big deal. As long as there are now tear outs or catches sanding only takes a quick pass and your done. It is fixing those other problems that can take a lot of time. So, unless you are a skew chisel purest, I think anyone will love these tools. The carbide tips hold up for a long time and the tools give you great control of your turning. They look expensive initially but you really do get a lot of tool for the money.
remove wood fast
If you are serious about removing wood this is the tool to get. It is a heavy duty tool that feels like to will last forever. Stays sharp too!! In fact, I have cut several bowls with it and have not even turned the cutting blade yet. This type of tool is a little spendly, but it is so easy to use that it is worth it.
Great Tool - does what it says!
I have used it to turn large bowls and small tops. I want the other tools but can't afford them yet. Soon I hope.
Carbide insert lathe chisels
I'm an intermediate novice turner and I have to say this is a very nice chisel. It works just as it is advertised and in the videos. Although the chisel is expensive, I got it when it was on sale. The cutter heads aren't cheap but they do stay sharp longer than HSS and there are places where you can get them cheaper individually but you have to have a bulk order. Overall very nice tool that removes the material with little effort and difficulty. P.S. I wouldn't replace all of my HSS tools with these, I just like its aggressive cutting.
No more tools required!
I bought one of Ci1 Roughers to cut down on the amount of sharpening I have to due while turning Large 22in. bowls out of rough stock. Peacan/Oak it doesn't matter this tool roughs out wood like butter. Dry or Wet. As far as the cost of the replacement cutters 13/14 bucks is well worth the time it takes to sharpen my other tools which are now actually gathering dust. Great job on a beautiful excellent made turning tool!
Ci Easy rugher is Fantastic
This Tool is fantastic. It is more than a rougher but it is the best roughing method that I have tried. More time turning and less sharpening. The only negative is the cost of the replacement blades, but they do last a long time. I will be expanding my collection and purchasing more of these tools.
It works and is better for the hands.
**Cutters are ok sharp out of the package and priced ok. * Disposable cutters. **Tool is very long and may interfere with tailstock on some lathes. * Tool price. ***Tool does rough out large amounts of wood fast and easily. * My tool did "catch" several times with heavy long term use as the cutter became duller. * Speed of cutting and finish becomes worse as the cutter dulls.
Much easier to learn and use than other turning tools. Makes roughing a breeze.
this tool is a perfect addition to your turning arsenal. Would recomend but the replacement bits are pricey
Wonderful..cuts production time in half.
Works very well on even very hard wood like African Blackwood. I have several of these "easy" turning tools now and they have cut the time it takes to create a set of bagpipes or an Irish Flute in half. It can be used for much more than roughing.Highly recommended!
good tool without a steep learning curve
A great tool and is especially good at turning tenons on bowls. It does a good job on roughing bowls.
Ci1 Easy Rougher
Great tool! It roughs out items fast. Cuts great without catches from the get-go. It cuts amazingly well and fast. So far I'm very pleased with it and look forward to improving my turning as I use it more.
A turning tool that really works.
Works as advertised.
