Good and smooth operating router
After having used Porter-Cable and Bosch routers for years, I bought this router to replace my aging PC690 and added plunge capability. After using the Festool 1400 for almost a year I have to say it is the smoothest operating router I have ever used. The soft-start is really good as commented on by others. The veriable speed adjustment and dust collection are also very good. The one major fault I have with the router you can't properly center a guide bushing with it. If you do any sort of patern work or inlay template work, you will find it difficult as there is no way to adjust the base plate to center a guide bushing with the supplied metal snap-in bushing adaptor. I also find the stock base plate with the large center hole and narror base to be quite tippy when using it to do edge work with small bits. I fixed both of the above problems by fabricating my own traditional round sub-base. I wish Festool would make a simple clear plastic sub-base as it took time to make a good one from scratch with toleranced mounting holes to permit centering adjustment. One last comment, the plunge operation is great and I like the ease of depth adjustment, one warning though, the adjustment scale is metric which may or may not pose a problem for some users.

Nice Router
This is a great router, the soft start is a joy no more hard starts and having a router jerk in your hands. The dust collection is superior to any thing I have used. The only two down sides I have come across are limited after market accessories such as circle cutting jigs. The great dust collection comes with limited visibility of the bit so it is very hard to route to a line and stop.
