Ebony, Brazilian (Swartzia panacoco) is a hard and durable wood from South America. Heartwood ranges from olive brown to almost black, with possible light or dark markings that are sharply separated by sapwood that will be lighter and yellow in appearance. The grain is almost always straight but can have irregular patterns. Wood texture is usually fine and uniform, machines and turns well.
