Proudly crafted in the USA, this Rougher is part of the latest addition to the Easy Wood Tools line – Easy Start™ Tools, which allow woodturners of any skill level to begin using quality carbide tools at a low start-up cost. The Easy Start Rougher features a 3/8" x 3-1/2" long square steel tool bar with a protective black oxide finish, a 9" maple handle with a traditional style grip, and best of all it utilizes genuine EWT replacement cutters – the same cutters that are used on the premium EWT mini tools. The cutters are designed so that you do not have to “find the bevel” when turning. Simply advance the tool slowly into the workpiece and begin cutting straight in, or sweep the cutter from left to right, or right to left. You will find this tool invaluable for those smaller more intricate turnings, such as pens, ornaments and smaller bowls, as well as for roughing, finishing and detail work.

• Tool is ideal for beginners, schools, and kit makers.

• Uses genuine EWT replacement cutters: #149933 Square, #151021 2" Radius

• 9-1/2" overall length

Turning has become quite a growing art with new and different innovations hitting the market in recent years.  It is an art that dates back to around 1300 BC when  a two-person lathe was developed by the Egyptians.  One person would turn the wood with a rope while the other used a sharp tool to cut shapes in the wood.  I guess you could say we’ve come a long way in technology.  But with the decline of industrial arts programs in our schools, the education of hands-on woodshop activity has seemingly been left to one organization which has taken on the responsibility of making sure the art of woodturning lives on.  That organization is the American Association of Woodtuners (AAW).  This organization is an international, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with over 15,000 members in the United States and throughout 33 different countries with 350 AAW Chapters.  These chapters are independent organizations of local enthusiasts who come together to learn more about the craft and enjoy fellowship with other turners.  Their voluntary mission is to provide education, information, and organization to those interested in the art and craft of woodturning.

Very glad that I've got this!

I use this primarily for acrylic and TruStone penblanks and it has proven to hold its edge very well. Less time sharpening & more turning! Yea! BUT, the first one of these that I received, the blade retaining screw could not be loosened. I have to praise the WOODCRAFT customer service for PROMPTLY correcting it

Great tool but I need help!!!

I just got this tool and am trying to switch the blade. The retaining screw will not loosen. I have tried penetrating lube, heat, and visegrips on the allen wrench (which now has an interesting, but frustrating, spiral twist!)But the screw will not break free. Any suggestions?

    Excellent tool

I use this with the straight insert for initial roughing. Saves wear and tear on my mini rougher with the 2" radius insert. At just a little more than 1/2 the price of the full up mini rougher it is worth evey penny. This is not the first tool I have purchased from Woodcraft. Awesome service.

    Problem Solver!

I bought this tool for my wife. She enjoys making pens but doesn't like using a conventional roughing gouge. This rougher solved that problem. Now I can't get her out of the garage.
