Black and white ebony (Diospyros embryopteris) is an exotic wood with color that will vary, usually uniformly black with light-colored bands, pale to medium brown zones, or with marked contrast between almost white and black wood. The wood has a fine texture with mostly straight grain. A rare find. The wood takes a high finish and turns well. Ebony is commonly used for small ornamental purposes, such as piano keys, musical instrument parts, pool cues, carvings, and other small specialty items. The wood is exceptionally dense and strong. Southeast Asia and Laos.

      Beautiful end result!

I bought four of these blanks that I could cut in half with enough length to make eight Executive style pens. I had five failures, two on the drill press, one using the end mill and two on the lathe. Two of those failures were probably my fault, but the diagonal cut and grain on these blanks makes them more challenging than most other blanks. The three successes turned out really nice!

      A challenge to complete!

I bought four of these blanks and was successful completing 3 pens. Each blank yielded two blanks, so I was three for eight. Two of the failed in the drilling phase. One cracked when using the end mill and two came apart on the lathe. With each failure I added more steps to try to increase my odds. The three pens that I completed are beautiful, well worth the challenge. I don't see a way to post a picture here or I would. Curt

      Very Nice!

This is beautiful wood, with many interesting patterns. The wood seemed relatively damp when I first received it. The first pen that I made looked great, then 1-2 weeks later cracked down the side from drying. I let it sit for another 6 months to dry further, and the second one looks great. Picture attached.
