    Details

Big leaf Maple Burl (Acer macrophyllum) has figure consisting of swirly, unpredictable grain patterns with light to dark variations of cream brown to dark brown color. Natural edges, bark inclusions and internal voids may be present and are not considered defects (in fact, they usually add character to a piece). Big leaf maple burl can be somewhat difficult to turn because of its unpredictable grain. It does, however, polish very nicely. It can create interesting turnings such as pens, bottle stoppers, bowls and ornaments. It is also great to cut into slices for clock making, or thin slabs for beautiful box tops. Air-dried.

    • Unpredicatable grain patterns

    • May have Natural Edge

    • Finishes well

Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.

Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

      Burl is lacking

Over the years, I've bought a lot from Woodcraft, both online and from our local store. I have always been very pleased with Woodcraft quality. I've also bought a lot of burl wood for turning, but none of it from Woodcraft. For a turning project that I had planned, I decided to buy a piece of big leaf maple burl from Woodcraft. The first piece that I received had less than 10% burl. I was not happy and called customer service. They responded immediately and sent a replacement piece suggesting that it would be heavily burled. The replacement piece was better but it was no more than 25% burl. I used it, and the final product looks good. The burl, however, is nothing like what's picture and not nearly as good as it should be.
