    Details

Basswood Grab box contains approximately 10 lbs. (5-1/2+ bd. ft.) of various sized pieces of (Tilia americana). Fine straight grain material with an even texture and little contrast between early and late wood. Creamy white in color and lighter in weight than the related European Lime. Fairly soft, preferred wood for carving. Canada and USA.

    Features:

    • A carver's delight

    • 1-1/4" minimal thickness

    • Cuts easily and cleanly with and against the grain

    • Preferred by master carvers and perfect for beginners

    • Take advantage of this great value on quality carving stock

Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.

Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

Carving and Turning Blocks. Blocks are sawn to +/- ¼" of size listed.

      Very poor quality basswood

I ordered 2 grab boxes to have a supply of small pieces for beginners and woodcarving club projects. My expectations were not very high. They still managed to dissapoint. Almost every piece had mineral streaks, knots and wane. The pieces were smaller than anticipated. Out of 40 lbs of wood, I might get 5 lbs of usable material. This is not the quality product that I am accustomed to from Woodcraft. Buyer beware!

      scrap to carve

I'm beginning to carve. This is great material to start practice on. The only thing I did not like was discoloration in a couple pieces.

      Grab box works for me

The wood is of good quality and appropriate sizes with lots of variable sizes for variable projects.

      Grab and go

I can grab a piece and start carving. Shape determines parameters and focus.

      Pretty much what i expected

The wood came really fast and was pretty much exactly like the picture, clean and straight cut basswood. It had many varying lengths and widths. Except the thickest they got were 2", I was hoping i'd get at least a couple 4" thick ones cause i cant do a whole lot with such thin wood.

      Good grab box

I ordered this so that I could make block prints with the wood. It has since proven to be up to the task.

      Frist Class Product

All the Basswood Blocks in the grab bag were of good size, and thickness. A couple were bigger then I thought they would be. [...] The best part they were of good working size and the grain of the wood was for the most part all going the same way, with no splits or cracks

      Good stuff

I use this stuff for whittling or carving. Caged balls, chains, etc. I thought they were good choices of shape and size.

      Cracked, splintered, knotted-a real mess

The grab-box I received looked nothing like the photo on the website. Every piece was rough and splintered. The large ones had deep cracks that ran through the whole piece, and one was spray-painted blue. This was a box of scrap, of unusable off-cuts. Not recommended.

      Basswood Surprise Box

I like the sizes I received but the wood was much more dense and harder than I expected. Much will be utilized for other items other than carving. Will Get-t-done but will take much longer and hard on knives.

Poor Quality & Bait and Switch

Although Woodcraft replaced the stained piece of wood carving I endevored to ask for mort as: The amount of wood in picture did not come close to what I got (7 pieces of various sizes) One Piece had a blue stain on it which made it useless to me.

      good box

the box of basswood was filled with good carving wood. In the past I have had to return the boxes I have received because of poor wood quality; pieces were rotted or split. I have asked that the boxes be inspected before being sent to me, but it made no difference in the quality sent. This box was a winner.

      I was pleasantly surprised!

I expected to receive a box full of small pieces, but surprisingly the majority were medium to large pieces. Useful for many "real" carving projects. I hope I can get another assortment like this!

      Excellent Assortment!

I bought this box of basswood for use in whittling. It has a great variety and none of the pieces can be considered too small. The box contained various sizes of blocks for the most part. There were a couple nice boards I may try to chip carve.
