The Red Mallee Burl (Eucalyptus oleosa, E. socialis) is prized for its vibrant color and heavy concentration of burl eyes. Mallee trees are scrubland vegetation that is common in many parts of Australia in dozens of varieties. The trees are prolific producers of burl growths that can be harvested without cutting down the tree, which is why you normally see Australian burls in cap form.

    • Vibrant color mixed with burl eyes and unique grain patterns
    • Excellent for turning or carving one-of-a-kind bowls
    • Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible
Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

Very nice burl but they weigh much less than advertised.

I ordered this burl and another at a very good sale price and received a few days later. The box felt lighter than I expected so I decided to weigh the burls to see if they were within the 7-9 kg range. Sure enough, both weighed barely 5 kg which meant they should have been sold in the 5-7 kg product as they were over 2 kg lighter than the 7 kg minimum they should have met. When I called to complain I was told that this was due to moisture loss from the time they were weighed until when they were sold. I really don't doubt this, but they are advertising a 7-9kg burl so I think it is reasonable to expect to get what you pay for. If nothing else, for burls explain that the weight is as measured when cut and that the customer can expect to receive a burl that will weigh significantly less than this due to drying. I received small gift cards as compensation, but they need to do better. On the plus side, they do look like really nice burls.
