This class is designed for anyone who ever wanted to turn a bowl. No turning experience necessary. If you have turning experience and have your own tools, bring them, but we have enough for everyone. Topics will include wood selection, mounting options, tool selection, sharpening, sanding and finishing.
Join us for a one day relief carving class where we will complete a carving of a mother and bear cub dipping thier paws in water. The carving looks more difficult than it really is. We will take it step by step and by the end the day every student will have a completed carving. Carving experience will help, but the class is designed to allow for both experienced and new carvers. Rick will also go over safety tips, and sharpening techniques. Finishing your completed carving. Some students like to wax or an oil finish, and others, paint the carving. Rick will do a demonstration of how he finished his sample Each student will get a cutout basswood blank, and a bench hook to secure the carving while in class. If you have your own carving tools, please bring them along. We will primarily use a V-tool and one or two chisels, a number #3 and a number #5. Rick has tools that you can borrow during the class if you need them.

Try your hand at the traditional Japanese craft of Kumiko. The subtle precision of this artform is a peaceful way to engage both hands and mind. In this class, students will learn the basic techniques of this centuries-old Japanese woodworking art form. We will cover some basic hand tool skills and safety, and then spend the bulk of our time together building the traditional hemp leaf (Asa-No-Ha) pattern. The Asa-No-Ha pattern incorporates all the fundamental skills needed for future exploration of the Kumiko art form. At the end of the workshop (~4 hours), you should leave with a completed decorative panel. Price included all materials. Tools and jis will be provided for this workshop. Jigs and/or additional panel strips are available and can be ordered for purchase. *Kumiko requires being able to see and work with small pieces of wood and so it is recommended that you bring reading or other corrective lenses for close-up work if your vision necessitates it.
