Woodworkers often prefer hand tools for their quiet, precision, control, and to experience classic woodworking without the space, power requirements, and noise of large power tools (which have other advantages) Students, through formal instruction, demonstrations, and an in-class project, will be introduced to working wood with simple hand tools. Students will learn: • how to measure, mark, and layout work. • the basics of cutting, planing, and preparing stock. Students will be introduced to simple joinery, including rabbets, mortice and tendon, and dovetail joinery. • basic assembly techniques, • how to apply a traditional oil finish. Instruction will be primarily hands on, and each student will, over the course of the program, construct for themselves a traditional carpenter's tool tote. The class is taught on 5 consecutive Saturdays beginning October 5, from 9-12:30.

Make an Epoxy River Serving Board

Part 1: Sunday, October 13, 10 AM - 2 PM

Come join us for a two part class and learn how to easily make an epoxy river charcuterie board. On day one, you will learn how to custom make a mold, cut and prep a live edge slab, and mix and color the epoxy. Day two will be all about de-molding, cutting to final dimension, edge treatments, and final sanding and polishing Your finished board will measure approximately 20"x12"X1" and be a great gift idea for a loved one, or a perfect conversation piece at your next party.

Make a Wooden Mallet

Saturday, October 19, 1 PM - 5 PM

“There's something very satisfying about using a tool you've crafted yourself". Join Phil in making a joiner's mallet weighted head and handle fixed to the head with a wedged tenon. The face is then covered with leather to avoid marring. The result is a weighted mallet you will find indispensable in joining wood together in your various projects. This project focuses on use of the table saw, including making a tenon on a handle, a drill press, and the miter saw.

There are very few as immediately gratifying results in woodworking as watching a rough, angular piece of wood turn into a lovely, smooth bowl. Using carbide tools you will bypass the use of traditional tools and learn techniques unique to carbide cutters and the lathe. With no sharpening of tools your creative energy will be directed to the end result! Learn the basics of lathe operation, safety, and turning techniques and go home with a project you'll be proud to show your family and friends.

Want to learn to work with wood? Never touched a tool? No problem… this Basic Woodworking class will guide students on how to set up, use, and maintain all major woodworking tools including the table saw, jointer, planer, drill press, and more. Each student will have an opportunity to work with power and hand tools, while completing two projects—a decorative cutting board with some simple inlay, and a 4 sided box with contrasting lid-- chosen to teach practical use of these tools. The basic techniques will go a long way in helping your woodworking journey. Upon completion, you'll feel confident enough to not only use all of these tools, but to make wise purchases of your own tools. Taught by renowned instructor Jamie Yocono. With a degree in Furniture Design and Journeyman status as a union carpenter, Jamie Yocono’s passion for woodworking has spanned almost 50 years. She previously taught for the University of Akron, UNLV, CSN and opened Wood It Is!, a private woodworking school here in Las Vegas. Jamie also started the Sin City Woodworkers in 2009, a diverse group of woodworkers who meet each month to discuss all things wood related. Her blog – “Let’s Talk Wood” was recently named one of the top twenty woodworking blogs on the web. The class is taught over 4 distinct sessions. The cost for all 4 sessions is $400 for tuition, and $149 for materials. The materials fee is due directly to the instructor at the first session.

Big Cutting Board

Want to have a Big Board to hold your full packer brisket or prime rib? In this three-part class we'll design, construct and finish a 24" x 19" x 1.75" hardwood cutting board. You'll select from walnut, maple, cherry and padauk to construct your custom board. In the first class we'll cover design, layout and discuss the unique construction challenges of big boards. In the second class we'll prep and glue up our boards. Sanding, finishing and adding a juice groove, if desired, will complete our third session. Stop by and check out the finished Big Board Bob constructed. The retail value of the Big Board is over $550.00! Class signup must occur at least one week prior to first session.

Our “Date Night: Pizza and Ice Cream” is a great opportunity to have fun and learn a new skill with your significant other or good friend. In this class, each of you will create a beautiful kitchen accessory (pizza cutter and an ice cream scoop) and have a great and memorable time together. The price is per couple; how you split the pizza and ice cream bill later is up to you!

Make A Custom Knife Handle

Sunday, November 10, 10 AM - 2 PM

In this hands-on class, students will learn how to make beautiful knives! With a set of wooden knife scales and a knife kit, each student will create their own custom knife to take home. . The instructor will cover how to attach the scales to your knife blank, shaping, sanding and the final finishing.

Making A Resin Blank and Pen

Part 1: Thursday, November 14, 5 PM - 8 PM

Part 2: Saturday, November 16, 1 PM - 5 PM

Customized pen blanks give you the opportunity to really elevate your pen making. In this two part class you will learn how to cast a pen blank – and then turn that blank into your own custom pen! Week one will focus on resin casting basics including resin types, colorants, molds, and pressure pots. You’ll select colorants, mix your resin and pour it into the mold. Then, in week two, you will come back to the shop to de-mold your pen blank, drill it, insert the tubes and turn your pen!

Intro to VCarve

Saturday, November 16, 9 AM - 1 PM

Interested in utilizing CNC technology to create your projects? Join Phil to learn how to get started being productive with basic 2D CNC functions using VCarve software. He'll introduce you to VCarve, the software most CNC users use. He'll also cover the basics of a CNC -what they do, how to mount and execute projects, and how to optimize projects for carve time. During the class, you'll follow along as Phil sets up CNC files, teaches basic 2D operations and project generation in VCarve, and then uses a CNC for some carving. A great introduction to help you get jumpstarted in CNC.

Make a Bandsaw Box

Sunday, December 1, 10 AM - 2 PM

In this class, you will make a bandsaw box with drawers. You will learn about how to identify the best place for entry cuts, you will cut out drawers and hollow them, then close the open cuts and prepare for finishing. Students will go home with a fully assembled box that they may choose to further sand and finish at home. With these basics, you will be able to build an incredibly wide variety of functional and/or whimsical boxes on your own.

Turn a Pepper Grinder

Thursday, December 5, 4 PM - 8 PM

Discover the joy of creating a beautiful centerpiece pepper grinder. Using a pepper grinder that you have crafted is immensely satisfying. This class will focus on techniques to quickly craft a pepper grinder with tips and tricks to produce a consistent beautiful piece of functional art. This class also recap the basics of lathe operation, and safety.
