During this class Louis will teach you how to turn your own pepper mill. He will assist you with, basic designs, material selection, boring holes, assembly, and finishing. Build a one-of-a-kind Machete in this hands-on workshop. Students will customize a Machete by creating and installing handle scales from their choice of wood species. Participants will learn the fundamentals of knife handle construction, including grain orientation, scale layout, shaping, fitting, sanding, and finishing techniques. Using woodworking tools and abrasives, students will transform rough wood into a comfortable, attractive handle that showcases the unique character of their selected wood. By the end of class, each student will leave with a completed, functional Machete and a solid understanding of the techniques used to create custom wooden knife handles.
Learning how to build a Lidded Box is a great introduction to box making. The skills used to cut accurate miters will be explained in detail as students make their own box. The joints will be reinforced with splines using accenting wood to add strength and beauty. You will be using a variety of tools to accomplish this including the Table Saw, Router, Drum Sander and various hand tools. We will be using hardwoods to complete this project and you can take it home to apply the final finish. Different finishing techniques will be discussed in the class.
