Dovetail Workshop

Tools Required: Dovetail or carcass saw, Set of bench chisels (1/4, 1/2 and 1 inch), Dividers, Marking gauge, Marking knife, Dovetail layout template (Veritas 1:6), Tape measure, Carver's mallet, Coping saw w/extra thin blade, Smoothing Plane, Pencil
Description: Dovetail joinery is a hallmark of fine craftsmanship. The joint lends a touch of class, distinction and quality to all styles of fine furniture. In this class, students will improve their efficiency and expand their satisfaction in cutting dovetails by hand. We will survey the tools and techniques used to establish a quick, consistent and enjoyable routine for cutting this heralded joint. Both through and half-blind dovetail techniques will be addressed. As we discuss, demonstrate and practice the joint, students will learn the absolute essentials to successful dovetail joinery with a focus on dovetail layout, work-hold strategies, hand-sawing techniques, chisel techniques, assembly and cleanup. By the end of class, students will know the secrets to fast, consistent and accurate dovetailing.
