Scheitholt Making

Description: Students will learn to build and play the scheitholt, ancestor of the dulcimer. No experience necessary, basic shop safety and techniques will be covered. This course will serve as an introduction to woodworking, but those with woodworking experience will be able to build on their existing skills. We will explore the process of building a scheitholt step by step: laying out the body, shaping the peg head, the foot, sound-holes and placing frets. At the end of the workshop you will be holding a finished scheitholt and experience the unique satisfaction of playing an instrument you have built. The class will include discussion on the origins of the instruments and its travel and transformation from Europe to the mountains of Appalachia.
