Making a 3D cutting board doesn’t have to be intimidating! Join our resident cutting board craftsman, Jody Greene, as he walks you through how to make the perfect gift for the holidays! Using only three different woods - maple, cherry, and walnut – Jody will guide students through the process by teaching techniques required to build a cutting board: how to make dead-on straight cuts and accurate angled cuts on the bandsaw, and how to plane, sand, glue, and clamp the cutting board. Topics to be covered include: bandsaw mechanics, correct blade tension, accurate angle cuts, gluing techniques, end-grain planing, end-grain pattern alignment, food-safe finishes, and care and maintenance of cutting boards. By the end of the day, each student will have a fantastic 3D cutting board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels. To minimize drying times so that the student can finish their bowl in a reasonable amount of time, we will be using dried bowl blanks. We will also discuss various finishes to add some personalization to your bowl. Once finished, you will be able to enjoy your bowl for years to come. Note: This class utilizes Easy Wood Tools with carbide cutters. If you prefer classic High Speed Steel (HSS) tools, bring your own or inquire within when attending class. This class will cover shop safety and the proper use of a lathe by making a basic bowl from start to finish. In addition to the lathe, we will also use the bandsaw to prepare your bowl blank. To minimize drying times so that the student can finish their bowl in a reasonable amount of time, we will be using dried bowl blanks. As with any class here at Woodcraft of Lexington, personal safety will be foremost. In addition to normal shop safety procedures, class attendance will be limited to promote social distancing. The shop equipment will be sanitized prior to, and upon completion of each class. Masks will be required by all people, including the instructors. If you forget to bring a mask, we have extras free of charge.

This is a great introduction to turning acrylic or resin on a lathe, with the end product being a pen to keep that you made yourself from start to finish. Previous turning or woodworking experience is helpful but definitely not required. We cover the basics of safety, the parts of a lathe, lathe tools, and accessories, as well as everything you need to start making acrylic or resin pens, bottle stoppers, Christmas ornaments, and other turned creations! During the five hour class, students in the class will learn how to select and cut pen blanks, drill and mount the blanks on the lathe, turn the pen barrels, wet sand, and assemble a pen. And the skills learned in this class will easily transfer to other spindle turning classes or projects.
