This is a two part class, building over two days. You will learn new skills and techniques to add to your toolbox in this class! Acrylic Pen Turning

Saturday, October 12, 12 AM - 5 PM

This is a great introduction to turning acrylic or resin on a lathe, with the end product being a pen to keep that you made yourself from start to finish. Previous turning or woodworking experience is helpful but definitely not required. We cover the basics of safety, the parts of a lathe, lathe tools, and accessories, as well as everything you need to start making acrylic or resin pens, bottle stoppers, Christmas ornaments, and other turned creations! During the five hour class, students in the class will learn how to select and cut pen blanks, drill and mount the blanks on the lathe, turn the pen barrels, wet sand, and assemble a pen. And the skills learned in this class will easily transfer to other spindle turning classes or projects.

Chisel and Handplane Sharpening

Friday, October 18, 4 PM - 5 PM

Bring a tool from home, for this hands-on class! We will explore a variety of methods to sharpen your woodworking hand tools. Learn how to sharpen plane blades and chisels for this one. Learn how to maintain a sharp edge with and without a jig. Oil stones, water stones, diamond plates, ceramics, and granite plates will be available for comparison. We will discuss where to invest your money in new sharpening gear and caring for it properly, as well as what to look for when shopping for new tools or new old tools for your woodworking arsenal. One personal tool sharpening is included in the class. Additional tool sharpening is $10.00 per tool.

Woodturning - Mallet And Bowl

Want to turn a wooden carver's mallet? How about a turned wooden bowl? This is your chance to make both…. This two-day class will focus on various aspects of turning on a lathe. We will start off with shop safety lathe selection, tuning, and operation. We will be using traditional turning tools for this class. While on the lathe, we will begin with spindle turning, ultimately finishing with a carver's mallet. The second portion of the class will focus on turning a bowl. To better assist students to finish the projects, we will be using dried wood for the turnings. This will allow the students to take home a completed mallet and bowl, ready for their choice of finish. Time permitting, we will try out a couple of other surprise projects.

If you forget to bring a mask, we have extras free of charge.

Stair Step 3D Cutting Board

Making a 3D cutting board doesn’t have to be intimidating! Join our resident cutting board craftsman, Jody Greene, as he walks you through how to make the perfect gift for the holidays! Using only three different woods - maple, cherry, and walnut – Jody will guide students through the process by teaching techniques required to build a cutting board: how to make dead-on straight cuts and accurate angled cuts on the bandsaw, and how to plane, sand, glue, and clamp the cutting board. Topics to be covered include: bandsaw mechanics, correct blade tension, accurate angle cuts, gluing techniques, end-grain planing, end-grain pattern alignment, food-safe finishes, and care and maintenance of cutting boards. By the end of the day, each student will have a fantastic 3D cutting board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels.
