Knowing Ohio Woods Better: Wood ID 101

Ohio woodworkers, builders and others are fortunate to live in a state with such an abundance and diversity of tree species. Join tree farmer, sawyer and woodworker Randy Sanders to learn more about Ohio's hardwoods and softwoods. He has logged, milled, dried and worked with more than 35 species during the past 15 years. Using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and wood samples, he will discuss the basic properties, structures and uses of these woods. More than 30 species of Ohio wood will be viewed and discussed. Randy will show the different ways lumber and flitches are cut from logs as well as common defects and anomalies such as spalting, burls and black knot disease. Students will gain a better understanding of common wood terms including grain (straight, spiral, edge, top, end), figure, ray flecking, ring-porous, and others that will help you begin the process of wood identification and better understand what you see looking at wood. All will leave with two wood samples (one each of ring-porous and diffuse porous).
