Turning a River-Epoxy/Wood Bowl/Platter

This two-day class will introduce you to the tools, tips and techniques used to create and turn a project that combines colorful resins with natural wood and yields an unusual and beautiful bowl. Day one we will prepare the blank, attach an appropriate mounting system and introduce the resins. Day 2 – Resin doesn’t dry and cure quickly - so we will turn & finish the project after the epoxy has cured - Dave will introduce you to the special tools and techniques used to successfully turn and finish the project

This class will cover the basic steps required and answer your questions as you turn your first bowl. Do I want to turn green wood or dry blanks? I don't live on a farm, where do I find the logs to make green blanks? I found someone who wants a tree cut up, what's the best way to cut and store the logs? Where do I find dry blanks? Do they turn different than green blanks? Do I want to use conventional or carbide tools? We will spend the first part of the class discussing these issues as well as any others that you may have – Dave will explain the various choices and alternatives as well as demonstrate the basic mounts and steps involved in making a bowl. Late morning each student will have an opportunity to practice each tool on the practice blank Dave has mounted. Then each student will take a blank "from the tree to the table." A 10% discount will be granted to each student on most hand and lathe tools and accessories the day of the class.

Bowl Turning, Beyond The Basics- Using Traditional HSS Tools

If you have mastered basic bowl turning and/or are not satisfied with the results you are getting from carbide tools and want to jump to the next level, then this is the class for you. In this class we will cover the use of various traditional tool techniques to achieve the best possible finish on your bowl prior to sanding using both carbide and conventional scrapers and gouges. Dave will also show you a few "tricks" and techniques to enhance the quality of troublesome soft/punky wood and reduce tare-out and enhance sanding. We will also cover the basics of sharpening both gouges and scrapers - sharp tools are essential for a quality finish. We will end with discussion and demonstration of various final finishes and the use of the Beal Buffing System. Students will be granted a 10% disount on most accessories and hand tools the day of the class.

Basic Hand Cut Joinery

If you’re interested in hand tools and hand cut joinery, this series is for you! Take one or all, at your own pace and in your own order. Starting with the basics, this class will teach proper handsaw use and care. We will run through drills and warm ups used to insure you get a good straight cut when you are making your joints. This half day class is a prerequisite for all the Intermediate level joinery classes, but can also be taken on its own to provide you with a solid background in any cutting by hand, from felling trees to flush cutting dowels. Tuition includes a gents handle dovetail saw that will be used in class and will make a good starting point for any beginner hand saw aficionado.

Scroll Saw Basics

If you have been looking to get started in woodworking, the scroll saw is just the ticket. The scroll saw is a quiet and easy-to-use machine that will produce a wide variety of great projects. It can be used for creating fine, complex shapes and patterns such as fretwork, marquetry, intarsia, and inlay. This workshop is project oriented - designed for beginners just getting started or woodworkers wishing to expand their knowledge and skill level. Topics include blade selection, tension, pattern use, piercing, speeds, feed rates and cutting techniques. We will discuss scroll saw features, types, and what to look for when choosing a scroll saw. The goal for this workshop is for each student to have fun with woodworking, go home with a completed project and the inspiration to try more on their own.

Introduction To Cabinet Making With The Kreg Systems Step 1

Build a solid base cabinet Do you need a new cabinet in your home, and hate the flimsy products from the store. In this first of three classes, you will build a solid, 3/4 inch plywood cabinet (carcass) from scratch using the Kreg pocket hole system. You will learn to use track saws and the table saw to accurately cut a sheet of plywood into the pieces needed to assemble a 15” base cabinet. We will use Kreg jigs to properly drill the pocket holes that will allow for an accurate and very strong joinery technique. With the carcass finished we will discuss the next steps (and class) to design and assemble the face frame, and door.

Advanced Hand Planes

If you’re ready to take your hand plane skills to the next level, this class is for you. In just three evenings, you will plane and shave your way to a handmade fireside stool. This class will focus on planing on an angle and proper use of a spokeshave to round the stool legs. The class: Hand Plane Basics is a prerequisite for this course.

Introduction To Cabinet Making With The Kreg Systems Step 2

Build a face frame and plywood panel door The first class is not required. In the second of three classes you will dimension rough lumber, to cut, and assemble a face frame and door for the 15” base cabinet. You will learn to safely use the Jointer, Planer, Table saw, Miter saw, and Router table for your project. Participants will install the face frame and finished door onto the base cabinet using the proper hinges and jigs.

Build a drawer and install with drawer slides Participation in previous classes isn't needed. In the third class you will build a drawer with pocket hole joinery and plywood bottom. We will install the drawer onto the base cabinet using Kreg jigs created to make this job easier. We will dimension and cut a matching drawer front for the finished drawer and install onto the drawer. We will review any steps from the carcass construction, face frame, and door after assembling the drawer

Pyrography (Wooddburning) For Beginners

In this class, you will learn the basics of pyrography or wood burning. You will learn the 3 main tips or pens used, review temperature issues, safety, burn ideas, and wood materials. You will also learn image transfer, line work, and shading. By the end of the class, you will have a project to take home.

Intarsia Basics

Intarsia is a scrollsaw technique whereby you cut different species of wood into varied shapes to create a mosaic like picture. Each piece is sanded and formed to give the appearance of depth. Segmentation offers all of the same cutting and shaping skills of intarsia, but uses only one species of wood which is then stained or painted to achieve the colors you desire. In this class you will be doing segmentation to acquire the cutting and shaping skills needed for intarsia. When you are finished with this class you will have a better understanding of the skills needed to do an intarsia piece.

Pen Turning, The Beginning

This class is a full day introduction to turning pens, both wood and resin. No experience is needed. Art will introduce novices to lathe safety and operation. Waterfall Writing Desk/ Entry Table

In this class we will examine how to create a near seamless waterfall edge. the first part of the class will focus on setting up and practicing the cuts while creating a small lap desk. We will then take the knowledge and use it to create a live edge small writing desk/ entry table with a waterfall edge on one end and hairpin legs on the other. We will also discuss some options for strengthening the miter joint.

Woodworking Machine Fundamentals / Charcuterie Board

Participants will learn the correct use and safety practices when working with the planer, jointer, table saw, miter saw and router. We will first use the machines to mill rough cut lumber into dimensioned boards. The next step is to glue up the dimensioned lumber into a board that will be finished into a charcuterie board with the planer and router . A discussion on appropriate finishes will close the class.

Using resins and epoxies can help create beautiful projects, but which resin or epoxy is right for the job? Do I use a urethane resin or do I use an epoxy? (Wait, there’s a difference?!) How deep can I pour my resin or epoxy? What happens if I don’t mix using the correct ratio of resin/epoxy to hardener? How much do I pour? These are all questions (and then some) that will be answered during this class. In this two day class, we will be using the Jess Crow HDPE Reusable Forms to create a hybrid wood and epoxy cutting (or charcuterie) board. Day one will consist of a discussion about resin or epoxy and by the end of day one, students will pour TotalBoat ThickSet epoxy into an HDPE form that will become their own creation that they take home after day two. On day two (one week later), students will work with their demolded creations to flatten them and turn them into beautiful cutting boards or charcuterie boards that they will finish (during the class) and take home.

If you are a new turner or considering the purchase of a lathe or trying your hand at turning, this class will help you get started in the right direction. The first in a series by Dave Sanborn designed specifically for the new or prospective turners; this class will cover basic features and options available for the lathe itself as well as available accessories and tools. In the morning, Dave will demonstrate and discuss the basics of Conventional and Carbide tools; Spindle, Bowl, and Pen turning; and various accessories. The furniture that the Shakers built is making an amazing comeback., but what if your skills need polishing in order to join the furniture revolution? This four step classes will take you through the woodworking process. STEP ONE: Material prep will utilize the jointer, planer, table saw, chop saw as well as hand planes. STEP TWO: This step will be in Carcass construction, both traditional and modern carcass making techniques will be demonstrated and used I order to construct the cabinet carcass. Included will be dovetailing. STEP THREE: When most non-woodworkers look at a cabinet, all they see are the doors and drawers. Students will cut a door panel as well as rails and stiles using a router table. STEP FOUR: Making the drawer. Drawers are the most abused form of woodworking. Nothing will undergo the constant open and shut problems that they have to endure. This final Step will teach the student how to properly construct and install the drawer for your cabinet. Why are hand planes so expensive? Why can’t I get thin curling shavings like the YouTubers I watch? What do I do with this old plane my grandfather left me? Do I need a hand plane in this tech friendly new world? In this class you will learn the answers to these questions and more, including plane setup, tuning, maintenance, sharpening, selection, and use. This beginner friendly class will take you through the different kinds of hand planes and allow you to get some hands on experience. Spindle Turning - Beyond The Basics

The second in a series taught by Dave Sanborn designed for the new or prospective turner. In the first class, we touched on the high points of both Spindle and Bowl (Face Plate) turning and used carbide tools to make a mallet. Today we will introduce you to Traditional/Conventional tools. We will begin the day discussing the basic fundamentals of Spindle Turning. Several mounting techniques; between centers, four jaw chucks, jam chucks, etc., will be discussed and demonstrated. Next we will learn how to sharpen the conventional spindle tools. We will move on to learning how to turn basic coves and beads and do exercises to gain confidence with a spindle gouge. Nothing brings pride to a woodworker more than making things to display in their own home, so we will spend the afternoon using the skills we learned in the morning to make a Bud Vase that you will be proud to have in your home. The mortise and tenon is the basis for many different kinds of joints, from blind hidden joints to decorative wedges. We will be drilling out the mortise and finishing it by hand with chisels, and learning how to layout a matched tenon so the joint goes together perfectly. We will also discuss the many iterations of this joint and students will have the option to create one of the more challenging and decorative options as well.

Part 1: Thursday, July 24, 9:30 AM - 9:30 PM

This two day class will teach you how to cast pen or project blanks with Alumilite Clear Slow resin. Spend two days with Robert as he guides you through the resin casting process and answers any questions you have pertaining to the casting process. Day one will start with an explanation and demo of the resin casting process. Robert will walk you through the tools and equipment needed as well as talk about the nuances of resin casting, giving tips and tricks along the way. Finish day one by casting your very own project blanks that you will take home on the second day. On day two, Robert will walk you through how to prepare, turn, and finish a blank made from the same Alumilite Clear Slow resin (not the blank cast on day one). While the resin will be set and able to be handled, Alumilite Clear Slow takes a week to fully cure. The blank you turn will dress a Wall Street II pen, vegetable peeler, or coffee scoop (turner's choice). Students will leave the class with a project blank or two, and a completed turned project.

The most popular and strongest of the hand cut joints, the dovetail is considered by many to be the ultimate show of precision, strength, and artistry. In this class we will be focusing on the origins of the dovetail, when it was used on a daily basis because of its strength instead of its appearance. In one night you will learn layout, precise measurements, cut matching pins and tails, and at the end of the day have a functional dovetail joint cut by hand.

Adirondack Chair

Build this adirondack chair with the included template kit. You will use the table saw, jointer, band saw and router table to build this comfortable chair. At the end of this two day class you will leave with a completed chair ready for finish and template kit to build additional chairs, Dave will also discuss various finishing options. Chair will be built with weather resistant wood.

If you own Adirondack Chairs or built one at one of our classes, this end table will make a useful addition to your outside furniture. The table will be made out of weather resistant wood and provide years of enjoyment. You will be using the Festool Domino to join the slats together and align the legs together as well as the Kreg pocket hole system to attach the top to the base.

We will also cover the basics of sharpening both gouges and scrapers - sharp tools are essential for a quality finish. We will end with discussion and demonstration of various final finishes and the use of the Beal Buffing System. Lathe Operation & Turning 101.

If you are a new turner or considering the purchase of a lathe or trying your hand at turning, this class will help you get started in the right direction. The first in a series by Dave Sanborn designed specifically for the new or prospective turners; this class will cover basic features and options available for the lathe itself as well as available accessories and tools. In the morning, Dave will demonstrate and discuss the basics of Conventional and Carbide tools; Spindle, Bowl, and Pen turning; and various accessories. In the afternoon, you will do some hands on exercises and make a Mallet that will be a valuable addition to your workshop. A 10% discount on most accessories and hand tools will be granted to each student the day of the class.

Epoxy & Wood Charcuterie Board

Using resins and epoxies can help create beautiful projects, but which resin or epoxy is right for the job? Do I use a urethane resin or do I use an epoxy? (Wait, there’s a difference?!) How deep can I pour my resin or epoxy? What happens if I don’t mix using the correct ratio of resin/epoxy to hardener? How much do I pour? These are all questions (and then some) that will be answered during this class. In this two day class, we will be using the Jess Crow HDPE Reusable Forms to create a hybrid wood and epoxy cutting (or charcuterie) board. Day one will consist of a discussion about resin or epoxy and by the end of day one, students will pour TotalBoat ThickSet epoxy into an HDPE form that will become their own creation that they take home after day two. On day two (one week later), students will work with their demolded creations to flatten them and turn them into beautiful cutting boards or charcuterie boards that they will finish (during the class) and take home.

Hand Plane Basics

Why are hand planes so expensive? Why can’t I get thin curling shavings like the YouTubers I watch? What do I do with this old plane my grandfather left me? Do I need a hand plane in this tech friendly new world? In this class you will learn the answers to these questions and more, including plane setup, tuning, maintenance, sharpening, selection, and use. This beginner friendly class will take you through the different kinds of hand planes and allow you to get some hands on experience. Students are encouraged to bring their own planes to setup and tune, but planes will be provided for those still deciding to buy. Tuition includes the book "Getting Started with Hand Planes" by Scott Wynn for you to keep and continue your education.

Music box

Create a beautiful keepsake music box while learning some basic box making and layout skills. We will use the table saw, router table, planer, jointer, and drill press to complete the project. Time permitting, we will use the laser engraver to add a personal touch.

Woodworking Machine Fundamentals / Charcuterie Board

Participants will learn the correct use and safety practices when working with the planer, jointer, table saw, miter saw and router. We will first use the machines to mill rough cut lumber into dimensioned boards. The next step is to glue up the dimensioned lumber into a board that will be finished into a charcuterie board with the planer and router . A discussion on appropriate finishes will close the class.

Scroll Saw Basics

If you have been looking to get started in woodworking, the scroll saw is just the ticket. The scroll saw is a quiet and easy-to-use machine that will produce a wide variety of great projects. It can be used for creating fine, complex shapes and patterns such as fretwork, marquetry, intarsia, and inlay. This workshop is project oriented - designed for beginners just getting started or woodworkers wishing to expand their knowledge and skill level. Topics include blade selection, tension, pattern use, piercing, speeds, feed rates and cutting techniques. We will discuss scroll saw features, types, and what to look for when choosing a scroll saw. The goal for this workshop is for each student to have fun with woodworking, go home with a completed project and the inspiration to try more on their own.

Introduction To Cabinet Making With The Kreg Systems Step 1

Build a solid base cabinet Do you need a new cabinet in your home, and hate the flimsy products from the store. In this first of three classes, you will build a solid, 3/4 inch plywood cabinet (carcass) from scratch using the Kreg pocket hole system. You will learn to use track saws and the table saw to accurately cut a sheet of plywood into the pieces needed to assemble a 15” base cabinet. We will use Kreg jigs to properly drill the pocket holes that will allow for an accurate and very strong joinery technique. With the carcass finished we will discuss the next steps (and class) to design and assemble the face frame, and door.

Advanced Hand Planes

If you’re ready to take your hand plane skills to the next level, this class is for you. In just two evenings, you will plane and shave your way to a handmade fireside stool. This class will focus on planing on an angle and proper use of a spokeshave to round the stool legs. The class: Hand Plane Basics is a prerequisite for this course.
