After our Woodcraft Magazine blog on the Wheelchair Woodworking Shop, we were contacted by Carl Smith, a disabled woodworker who uploaded his handmade workbench photo to our Woodcraft Facebook page. The bench has a built-in grate area to catch the shavings from his Jet lathe with bed extension. After some commentary back and forth, and a phone call or two, we were fortunate to learn about Carl and his story.

Sewing Machine Project not for beginners

This is a not a good design for beginning woodworkers but will be a great challenge for advanced workers because of the number of custom designed parts. 2 pedestals (each different dimensions), 6 drawers (5 are different sizes), banded plywood veneer and inlayed hinges with a unique cut-out for the sewing machine with special attention to detail in accurately removing the center of the veneered top to fit your machine. Overall dimensions seemed to be very good, location of the machine within the cabinet works well. My quilting wife loves the large workspace, drawer storage and the ability to close the cabinet up and have it look like a beautiful family-room cabinet. The sewing machine lift is quality and works perfect! I used solid cherry and 3/4" cherry veneer plywood, made solid raised panel doors and altered the leg design, other wise it is built to plan dimensions. I saved some money and did not use cherry veneer plywood on the back as this cabinet will be against a wall.
