When it’s okay to screw up your wood
With the Wood Threading Kit—which offers precision cutters—you can make short work of cutting both inside and outside threads, though a few precautions are in order.
Problem Solving Products: Issue 21
Anybody who collects antiques knows of the myriad of applications that old world woodworkers found for threaded dowels (see “Best Applications” on page 69). The large, coarse threads offer remarkable holding power and an astonishing degree of torque. And now, with the Wood Threading Kit—which offers precision cutters—you can make short work of cutting both inside and outside threads, though a few precautions are in order.

learn to use this tool
When first tried the threads of the rod were shorter than the tapped hole. The thread box must be pushed down while in use to lengthen the thread spacing so you get the same number of threads per inch in rod and hole. Otherwise the threads bind. The thread box also needed the blade honed so it didn't tear. After adjusting it worked well and I'm happy with results

Needed a little tweaking but Awesome!
The one star off is due to the tweaking I had to do before it would work right. After tweaking it's definitely five stars! The dowel I received was a tiny bit oversized so it kept binding up in the entry hole. I used a scraper and trimmed down the dowel a little so it fed in easier. It still kept binding up on the way out. It took me a little fiddling to figure out that it was because the cutter wasn't protruding enough. Once I set the cutter correctly and rubbed on a nice helping of boiled linseed oil it worked like a dream! I wish they made bigger ones too.

Works as advertised
It does what it says! Just make sure you lubricate the tap and die with linseed oil during use. It makes a big difference!

Off Center
From the manual: "The hole in the removable wooden bottom is drilled to exact specifications by the factory." The opening in mine is not centered causing wider threads on one side. I used calipers to measure this. It cannot be corrected.

Works great!!!!!
Use proper dowel size.results are a sure thing!!

Needs improvement
When it works, it works great. The tommy bar on the tap is much too soft as a handle without wrapping it around the shaft. The cutter on the thread cutter is very low quality steel. I mangled mine on a hard spot (not a knot). I plan on making my own cutter as a replacement. With modification, this can be an outstanding tool.

Difficult to use
This was a disapointing product. The tap handle bent and it was very difficult to cut through maple even if well lubricated. The die was just as hard but was solidly made. Perhaps the 1 1/2 inch size is just to much to ask of this design.

great for vice screws
The woodthreading kit includes both the tap and die. There are many uses for a threaded wood screw. especially since you can use many different types of wood and can use it for a vice or for assembly of other wooden projects.
