The No. 91 combines the best of the Edward Preston and Sons’ plane designs with modern WoodRiver® features to create a “new classic” with the look and feel of a shiny antique but the body of shoulder plane equipped for serious shopwork, whether cleaning up tenons, rabbets and dadoes or creating joints. The WoodRiver® No. 91 is the result of over two years of extensive prototyping and testing to develop a classic look for a plane that works as good as it looks. The classic shoulder plane features were retained – narrow body, slightly proud blade (to clean corners), sides square to the sole, flat bottom and a necessary robustness—but a major new feature was added, an adjustable toe used to control the throat opening and help to minimize tear-out on end grain. The body of the No. 91 is Cr40 stress-relieved ductile steel, machined square and flat, and the blade is Mn65 tool steel hardened to HRC60-64 which combines toughness with the ability to take a keen edge. The blade advancement mechanism is smooth and precise. Dimensions : Body length -3/4", width 1/2", height 1-7/8"; Overall Plane length 6-1/2", height 2-3/8"; weight: 12.4 oz.; bedded angle, 15°; blade angle 25°.
  • For tweaking tenons, rabbets and dadoes
  • Sides square to sole
  • Classic look and feel

Good plan, needs more attention to blade

I have been looking for a small shoulder plane for a while now and I recently received this as a birthday gift. The fit and finish on this plane is really nice and the body feels quite solid. Importantly, the sole is flat and square. However, there is a lot of play in the adjustment mechanism and it does feel a little flimsy. Worst of all though, the blade was quite skewed (~1/32") right out of the box. This is the 6th plane I've purchased/received, so I'm used to having to touch up the blade, but this will require quite a bit of honing to correct (I don't have access to a grinder sadly). Going to contact Woodcraft about a replacement blade, will update review with outcome if possible.
