About This Product

Lake Volta Gaboon Ebony offers the beauty, density, and prestige of traditional ebony with distinctive natural character. Reclaimed from submerged forests in Ghana's Lake Volta, this remarkable wood is harvested from trees preserved underwater since the lake's creation in 1961, providing an environmentally responsible alternative to harvesting living forests.

Unlike traditional ebony that is often uniformly black, Lake Volta Gaboon Ebony features dramatic streaks of sapwood along with natural gray, brown, and reddish tones, creating unique visual interest in every piece. Its fine texture and typically straight grain make it highly desirable for decorative woodworking projects where appearance matters as much as performance.

Known for its exceptional density and durability, ebony machines to a smooth finish but requires sharp tooling due to its hardness. This premium hardwood is well suited for small specialty projects, fine turnings, inlays, instrument components, carvings, and other applications where its striking appearance can take center stage.

Features:

  • Great for knobs, pulls, inlays and accents in cabinetry
  • Straight grain, high density and durability
  • Excellent turning wood and finishes to a high luster
  • Native to Africa
