Kayak Building Part 6 – Shaving and Scraping the Epoxy
Earlier in May, Lee commented on Kayak Blog #3 that “I am an avid woodworker and kayaker and a regular visitor at our local Woodcraft Store (Parkersburg). I gotta do this!” Since Lee was a local customer, I contacted him through email and invited him to the lockmaster’s house to check out the boat. I found that he actually lives about 80 miles away, but he would be passing through the area the next week, so we made plans to meet in Marietta.

better than sandpaper
If you hate sanding(most of us), then this burnisher is for you. Cabinet scrapers are much less time consuming and cheaper than sanding. If you don't mind the little work that they require, you get the same finish as 420 grit sandpaper. It is very easy to use and comes with detailed instructions. This is great for beginners, as using a rod type burnisher takes practice.

Now I get nice curled shavings
I found cabinet scrapers disapponinting until I got this handy gizmo. I had been using a screwdriver to burnish and decided to buy a a real burnisher. Now I consider them about as handy as a sander. I get nice curled shavings after cleaning/squaring the scraper edge followed by a few passes through the burnisher. The guide provides a pretty consistent angle (accommodating scrapers of differing thickness results in a little play), and the burnisher produces a nice hook. I uses a scraper mostly to level up glued edges. Good results.

Miracles cost more than [$]
There are no miracles for under [$]. After spending much time trying to get card scrapers right with a file and burnisher, I thought this would be my last attempt because it would solve the problem. NOT!It helps, but I feel it has too much play in it and that's the reason my scrapers are not coming up sharper than they are. Kind of dissapointing for the money and because it came from Veritas.Basically, if you have a new scraper, and you can't get the old resharpened one to approximate that in performance, you don't have what you want. The search continues.
