I do lettercarving on 1" panels and had been using bar clamps on my bench. I bought two Veritas bench hold downs and they do a much better job of holding the wood firmly against the bench top. They're easy to adjust and the quality is superb.
Excellent Hold Down
I own two of these wonderful hold downs. I bought the first from Lee Valley and the second from Woodcraft when they first started carrying them. They are perfect for thick or thin benches and will hold your work right where you need it. I own many traditional holdfasts as well and can say that the Veritas hold down works as well as any of them. Some people complain about the price but I look at it as an investment. I will have these forever. The quality is off the charts.
Much better than the pound in type hold downs. Does not mar the work. Not as good of a hold as a vice to be expected. Will be useful for hard to reach areas.
costs too much, but worth it. I have a thick bench top, none of the traditional clamps worked well. This works better than I would have hoped. Now I need to save up for a second.
THIS IS A GREAT PRODUCT. IT WORKS VERY WELL. I RECENTLY BUILT A NEW BENCH WITH A 3-1/2" HARD MAPLE TOP WITH 3/4 INCH DOG HOLES AND THE SHAFT FROM THE VERITAS HOLD DOWN IS A LITTLE TIGHT BUT THIS WILL GET BETTER WITH USE. SEVERAL MONTHS AGO I PURCHASED A $15 HOLDFAST FROM A WOODCRAFT STORE (BEFORE WOODCRAFT STARTED CARRYING THE VERITAS HOLD DOWN) AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PRODUCT I EVERY PURCHASED FROM WOODCRAFT. WOODCRAFT SHOULD ONLY CARRY THE VERITAS HOLD DOWN EVEN THOUGH IT COST MUCH MORE.
