About This Product

The 15” Rip-Cut Timber Framing Saw is a large Japanese pull saw developed for timber framing, post-and-beam construction and log cabin work where fast, accurate rip cuts are essential. Its narrow blade profile delivers greater control than traditional log ripping saws, helping maintain a clean-cut line while working through large timbers.

Inspired by the legendary Maebiki whale-back saw, this hand saw for wood adapts a centuries-old design for modern timber construction. The lighter-weight blade is easier to guide through rip cuts while still providing the aggressive cutting action needed for tenon cheeks and general ripping tasks in green, soft or hard wood. Progressive rip teeth increase from 4.5 to 7.5 TPI along the blade, allowing smooth starts near the handle and faster material removal as the stroke develops.

The 15.3" blade is made from SK85 Japanese tool steel with impulse-hardened teeth that stay sharp through extended use. A 30° bent Japanese wingnut wood handle creates additional leverage during the pull stroke, increasing cutting efficiency while helping maintain control. Natural rattan wrapping improves grip and comfort when working through demanding cuts.

Part of a growing collection of premium Japanese woodworking tools, this hand blade saw bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern timber construction. Pair it with the matching crosscut version (#300142) to create a complete two-saw timber framing system capable of handling layout cuts, joinery preparation and stock breakdown.
