Sjobergs - Smart Vise
Sjöbergs is a leader when it comes to workbenches and their unbelievably great vises. Now, instead of buying the whole bench, Sjoberg introduces the smart vise. The Smart Vise is 14-1/2" W x 12"...

Poor product for the money
As a previous reviewer posted, it kinda works, but it's just poorly made considering the brand and the cost. All wooden components remained unsanded and poorly glued, and the drilled pieces were blown out, splintering the wood in some pretty scarring ways. I was disappointed. The good news, and worth mentioning, is that Woodcraft took it back gracefully and without complaint. The folks at the Miller Rd location in Greenville, SC are friendly and sincere. Thanks!
Very good vise
I needed a vice that I could attach to a thin metal workbench in my basement and this seemed to be the best option. The jaws are square and the screw is smooth. Materials are cheaper than Sjöbergs usual quality which was a bit disappointing. Also the four short screws that come with the unit are too short and the two outside screws did not attach to the top plate. I replaced mine with slightly longer screws. This vise is a good option if you need a woodworking vise but don't have the appropriate bench. The portability is an added bonus.
Take a pass on this one
I expected more from Sjoberg, but despite my 1-star rating, this one isn't all bad. It will hold your materials well enough. The materials used to build this vise are just poor. Most of it are mdf with a veneer on top. It is not solid wood. The vise itself is hard wood, but should be thicker. My vise is not square, so it holds things at an angle. With a Sjoberg name on it, I'd expect better. If you're considering building a workbench, I'd hold off buying this.
Just in Time
I was planning to build this vise for carving. Sjoberg came along at just the right time with this vise. I did add six holes to the main platform and another two holes to the vise. This makes it much more flexible for smaller pieces. Overall, very handy for flat work carving (I.e relief carving, chop carving).
It is what it is
This unit is very solid and grips very well. The directions leave something to be desired. I had to take mine back to Woodcraft for some minor assistance in the assembly. One problem I did encounter was that because of the limited distabnce between the top and the bottom plate you are limited in the type of clamp you can use to secure the unit.
Great vise for the small shop
Great vise for a small shop area, where i can clamp it to the workbench when i need it. Solid, built well, and easy to use. Only thing I would ask is that the plastic bench dogs get upgraded to something more useful.
