WoodRiver® Professional Pen Turning Mandrel allows you to switch between small turning projects of any length with a simple loosening and tightening of a nut. The professional pen turner's mandrel is self-centering ensuring no more off-center turnings and/or spacers for short length projects. A totally new concept, this mandrel features a collet that ensures that the shaft is always exactly centered on your lathe. Because the collet body is hollow, the amount of mandrel shaft extending from the collet can be varied for turning everything from key chains to larger pens. The locking nut and collet work like the collet in your router, just loosen the nut and slide the shaft in or out to the length you need, then tighten. The small end of the collet body features a 5/16" thread that allows you to pass a bolt through your headstock and, with the mandrel shaft removed, the collet assembly can be used as a 1/4" collet chuck!
Features:
- Precision machined professional pen turning mandrel eliminates off-center turning
- Turn two barrels at once, or single barrels up to 6'' long
- Collet chuck action
- Easily tighten with knurled nut
- Collet assembly can be used as a 1/4" collet chuck
- Adjustable mandrel can be used to turn a single pen section and avoid harmonic vibrations
- Morse Taper: #2
- (1) 1/4" collet
- (1) Collet nut
- (1) Mandrel shaft with washer and nut
- Bushing sets must be purchased separately

This is perfect for the job.
I use this mandrel with High School students and it withstands the abuse.

Super Idea
Why didn't somebody think of this years ago. Finally, the perfect mandrel!

Excellent mandrel! Only one complaint
Too me it was worth the extra $$ to get the "professional" mandrel that is adjustable. It's easy to use and quick to adjust. My one complaint is the length of the actual mandrel. I wish it were and inch or two longer! An adjustable mandrel should be able to adjust smaller and bigger than the normal one. I like that I can use the collect as a 1/4" chuck. Although my 1/4" mandrel doesn't fit all the way through the hole. If you only do pens then the standard model will be just fine but if you make other smaller items then the ability to adjust is priceless!

Better if I could hand tighten
I use the manduel for pens that I make and sell. I find it to work well for me. I would like it if the adjustment nuts could be hand tightened.

Excellent Product
The ability to change the working length of the mandrel is a big plus.

Does what it's supposed to
I purchased this to make pens and this will do the trick. It's well made and I'm sure I'll be happy with it.

Could use an extra inch or two
The construction of the mandrel is very nice. The #2 MT is convenient and the length of the shaft can be changed by loosening the collet nut and moving the mandrel shaft in or out of the base. My complaint is that it does not adjust out enough to accomodate both blanks of the Classic American BP twist pen kit for which I bought it. I have to turn the blanks individually for this kit and that makes for some slow going.
