Easy enough kit to make, looked great and worked well for 2 months. After which the drive gear broke 2 of its 4 teeth. Yes I took it apart. Don't waste your money or time building this kit.
Works Great for Me
It was easy to make, looks great and works fine. I have had it for over a week. I am going to buy another for sea salt.
Not representative of Woodcraft quality
I bought 2 and planned to buy more as Christmas gifts. Everything went well. I put it together, added batteries, tried it out (empty) and it worked, the light came on and I was impressed. I took it to show my wife. She picked it up and the unit dropped out. I assumed there was some twist catch, but there is none. I just decided to keep it for us. We put peppercorns in it, held it so the bottom wouldn't fall off and it worked fine. However, the third time, it still made the grinding sound, but didn't turn. I emptied it and tried again, but no luck. I assume the gear was striped.
Looks good on the shelf but pure junk
I bought 2 of these, turned one and it worked twice before it stopped grinding the peppercorns. So I changed out the mechanism and that one worked about four times before it stopped. The motors run but nothing comes out. I tried three different types of peppercorn with no luck. I'm just glad I didn't try to gift or sale any of these.
The product looks great and is a real eye catcher. I have had zero trouble with the grinder mechanism. The light is a cleaver touch. It is much easier to make if you have an extension for your bit so that you can use a scroll chuck and not have to use the jamb chuck. Of the three kits I just built this is by far the favorite.
Great kit but there is a "BUT"
I have built (4) of these so far and they all came out great. There is a "BUT" to my story. The motor appears to be very week and it has a clutch in the motor which it prevents the unit to grind when a peppercorn get's stuck in the grinder portion. I first thought it might have been just this one unit and called Woodcraft Headquarters where they immediatly said a new one would be sent out at N/C. I was very pleased with thier positive interest in taking care of the problem. The new one arrived and after about a week it started to jam up again. The other (2)that I had finished prior to recieving the new one also were all jammed up and would not grind. I made sure that the setting for the corseness was open as far as I could but it still happened. Took them all (3) of the apart to see if there was something else causing the jamming. I went out and purchased fresh peppercorns thinking that maybe they were to hard for the grinder motor to handle. Same thing, check batteries and there was no difference. I personally feel there are some serious issues with the motor mechanizm in this kit. I have sold one of them and I keep checking with the person who bought it and am told that it is running fine. I plan to contact Woodcraft again and ask if this issue has come up with other people. Overall it's an awesome kit and appears to be very well made (except for the motor). I hope to get to the bottom of this problem soon. I checked off that I would not recommend this to a friend however if the motor issues are addressed with the manufacturer I would give this product a very postive thumbs up !!!!
Great Idea - useless implementation
The grinding gears broke after just a couple uses. I tried with another kit, that two stripped the gears after just 3-4 uses. So few corns were ground before breaking that I can't see any drop in volume. Great idea, and once the gears are made of a material that can handle plain peppercorns it will be a very nice gift idea. My wife loved the concept but it has to work.
Don't waste your time
Had 2 but had to exchange 1 because it did not work. After 1 use the exchanged one is not working. Stick with the traditional pepper mills.
Don't waste your money!!!
I bought one for a gift and one for the house.. Got it done and it lasted about 2 minutes.... The shaft stops turning like it busted a gear... Took it back and got another, big mistake! It done the same thing!! So I made the one for the gift and tried it out... Yep same thing again.. They must have a cheap plastic gear in them... Now I go back to get my money back. But I am still out the 40 dollars I spent on wood!!!! I have done a lot of projects from Woodcraft and have been happy, But this mill is JUNK!!!!! I would give it 0 stars if I could.
