    Solid tool, but it's rough

I'm the kind of guy that buys a tool and then spends hours getting it right. Usually this is a matter of putting an edge on or stripping varnish and replacing with oil. But this one kind had me scratching my head. Some of it is really good, but it has some critically bad as well. Good: Handle - Not covered in varnish that had to be stripped off. Comfortable shape and good quality stock was used. Head - Good enough casting. Excellent shape lets you get up in there for detail work. Sheath - Very nice quality and execution on this. Bad: Handle - Logo was too deep. If you wanted to put this straight to use, you'd have nasty blisters from the sharp edges around 1/32" deep. This took a lot of sanding to fix. The lanyard hole is a bit high and it could use more swell at the end to prevent slippage. Head - Whoever ground the edge needs to be fired. The edge is terribly wavy and the grind is inconsistent going from 1/2" to 1 1/4" on one side and 1/2" -3/4" on the other. This is going to take hours at the grinder to fix. There are actually 3 distinct faces on the edge complete with points. It's really bad. Had I not bought it online, I'd have returned it and swore off the company for life. Instead, I'll just never buy Bison again. Overall, I've put less work into a certain "cheap" store's $7 hatchet that's given me years of trouble free use up until it needed a handle replacement and I spotted this thinking maybe I'd save some of that labor by buying a higher quality tool. What I received was disappointment. I could've had 7 of the cheap ones for the price of this, that would've let me be incredibly careless with them and just throw them in the bin when the handles gave out. I can't even imagine what was going through their heads when they looked at this one in the factory and decided to ship it out anyway.

    Very nice hatchet

My expectations were high because of the look of the hatchet and the fact that it was German made. I was very happy with this purchase and have used it a few times. It does a great job chopping kindling. It comes from the factory sharp but not razor sharp. You could sharpen it more but I think it is sharp enough. I love my Bison Hunters Hatchet 🪓

Almost what I was hoping for.

The craftsmanship on the head and handle are very good, but the grind on the edge is so lopsided it makes it look like there is a warp/wave in the blade. The top has one side ground almost a full quarter inch further back than the other, and the bottom is the same but the sides are switched making it very lopsided. It will take some work, but it is fixable with a file and stone.

    Done right

The head is ground correctly. No runout on the hickory handle. Sharpened well, kept the edge well. Leather is thick and heavy. I have a slightly larger GB hatchet that I this compares very well with. If I had to buy over again, I’d stick with this.
