    Not true gimlets

    Genuine gimlets have cutting edges in their miniature tips for truly drilling a starting hole, i.e. they actually remove material. These are merely awls, which means you're effectively punching a hole in the wood-- there is no cutting edge. For thin pieces of wood, you risk splitting your wood with these. For thicker pieces, particularly with hardwoods, it is extremely difficult to make a hole of any depth. Not surprising given the price.
