Apply A Stain Without Losing The Grain

After unsuccessful attempts with Minwax and other home improvement store stain products, I tried General Finishes Dye Stains in Medium Brown, Vintage Cherry, Merlot and Dark Brown. I was trying to match a color on some purchased furniture. Prior efforts with water based stains and gel stains came close to the color I wanted, but hid the grain of the cherry piece I had built. I first applied a coat of vintage cherry, then a coat of medium brown. The raised grain was knocked down with 400 grit sandpaper and a coat of Seat Coat was applied to seal the stain. I then applied one coat of General Finishes Georgian Cherry gel stain and finished it off with a General Finishes topcoat. This resulted in a reddish brown coloring with the entire grain showing.
