End Grain Cutting Board - CLS650

The intent of this class is to learn the basic skills and underlying principles used to construct an end grain board. This can be a cutting board, cheese board, butcher block, etc. The class is in three sessions because there are two overnight glue ups required. Day 1 we will discuss why to construct something end grain; how to prevent cracking; types of wood to use (and not use); required tools and their safe use; how to layout the board; performing the initial preparation of the stock and first glue up. Day 2 consists of cleaning the board up, cutting and arranging it into the desired final pattern, and the second glue up. Day 3 will be the final clean up; trimming; final sanding; edge routing/sanding; a discussion on finishes and how to maintain the board.

Woodworking Machinery

Saturday, August 1, 2026, 10 AM - 5 PM

Alignment, Safety, and Maintenance This is a class where students will learn aspects of using and owning woodworking machinery, including how to set up and align the different machines, safety (devices and practices), maintenance (preventive maintenance and repair), electricals (controls and safety), and use and application of cutting tools. There will also be opportunity for student questions. There will be a break for lunch (plenty of nearby places to grab a bite) or bring something to eat in the classroom. The instructor will be in the classroom during lunch to get to know students and discuss answers to questions.

Introduction to Spoon Making

Tuesday, August 4, 2026, 5:30 PM - 9 PM

This is an advanced level class for those who want to refine their stills and creativity. Building on basic cuts, students will learn the use of hook knives and carving gouges to carve concave surfaces. Students will use these cuts to create a ladle and teaspoon. Students will also learn how to secure and support a spoon blank and how to use a reference spoon for accuracy. Prerequisite- Completion of Introduction to Whittling and Intermediate whittling or experience in using pivot, push, and sweep cuts, in addition to variations of the pull cut.
