Good Inexpensive Chisels
I bought my first set about six months ago when they were on sale as a "beater" set to help protect my more expensive sets that I keep at the benches. I have examples from some of the other WoodRiver offerings, Narex, as well as some old Stanleys, Buck Brothers, and some Japanese chisels, all of which are well respected (along with some true old beater chisels). I did have to use thinner and an abrasive pad to remove the protective coating normally found on many tools these days in order to prevent gumming up the sharpening stones. While at it, I used the pad to reduce the slick surface on the handles. They sharpened quickly, not because they were soft but because they were already well machined and the grind marks were not as bad as I have encountered on other tools. I could tell by the action of the tool against the diamond stones that the chisels were very hard but sharpened quickly. The three larger chisels were slightly hollow ground which made it easier to flatten the backs to the edge, Some hollow doesn't hurt the use and can actually help (consider Japanese chisels). The whole process only took about ten minutes including stropping to the final edge. These chisels have become my "go-to" set for nearly all of my work and have only required minor touchup on a fine stone and my strop for a return to razor sharp edge. I like them so much I had to get a second set when they came up for sale in spite of having about 40 other sharp chisels already in the shop.
Product recommended !!!
Very good construction. A flat polished back is essential to a sharp edge.
Worth the money on half price sale
I bought these to use when I didn't want to risk a good chisel, and for that I am perfectly satisfied. The worst feature I am aware of after limited use is that the hard plastic handles are slippery, which is not a good quality in a chisel handle. They chisels honed very easily, which can be good, but may indicate that frequent honing will be required. For backup use I would say they are excellent; for primary use the handles alone make them a poor choice as they will be tiring if not actually risky to use.
Great for home projects.
I would buy this set again
I use these chisels just about everyday. They hold a good sharp edge for me. I would order this set again and again. Thanks
